Eight pages investigating the development of scholarly publishing across the continent

ON THE COVER Educating Africa

17 Leader: Tim Gillett Looking south

Greetings one and all! There is a decidedly international feel to this issue of Research Information. We are dedicating eight pages of the magazine to a Focus on Africa supplement, looking at ways in which scholarly publishing is developing across the continent. There is an overview by our former editor Sian Harris – now communications coordinator at the development charity INASP – followed by case studies from Botswana and South Africa, and a fascinating article on a ‘pop-up library’ that is helping to transform education in some of the poorest parts of Africa. We are planning similar supplements on Asia (October/November), Latin America (December/January) and the Middle East (February/March) in forthcoming issues of the magazine, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to be involved! Also on the international front, we carry a feature on the challenges and opportunities for publishers trying to do business in Russia, written by Martyn Lawrence. Elsewhere, on page 28 Sharon Davies takes a look at latest developments around humanities and social science publishing, Rebecca Pool investigates the resurgence of institutional repositories on page 31, while on page 34 David Stuart delves into the increasing use of semantic enrichment in information retrieval and discovery. Along with the latest news and an array of contributed analysis/opinion pieces, this a full and varied issue of Research Information. We hope you enjoy reading it! @researchinfo
