T

here’s no place better to wash away your stress than the beach. The rhythmic rise and fall of the waves soothes the soul and nurtures the spirit.

A beach vacation can be as action packed or as relaxing as you want. You may just want to slip away to a quiet beach where the footsteps left trailing in the sand are yours and yours alone. The shores of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey are filled with remote beaches, some with rugged shorelines; some with wide sandy shores and long stretches of solitude.

For those looking to get away from it all, Sandbridge Beach in Virginia provides a serene sanc- tuary. The strip of beach is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the East and by the protected marshes of the Back Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to the south and west. With no hotels, only beauti- ful rental homes, the beach’s biggest draw is its island-like appeal that leaves visitors feeling a world away, though they’re only a 20-minute drive fromthe bustling Virginia Beach boardwalk.

When you find that peaceful spot, stop and take the time to relax on a blanket or in a beach chair near the water’s edge. Be sure to slip a book in your beach bag and spend the day soak- ing up the rays and turning pages.
