Voltis ECO saves Somerset medical centre time and money O

ne of the largest medical centres in Somerset has cut its power bill by more than 11% through the simple installation of a compact Marshall-Tufflex optimisation unit.

Voltis ECO voltage

The Voltis ECO unit (measuring 435mm x 600mm x 275mm) was installed in a day by Forest Electrical, of Illminster, with the necessary power down for final connections scheduled for a weekend when the practice was closed. The payback period is calculated to be less than three years.

Marshall-Tufflex’s highly efficient and cost- effective

Voltis ECO range uses multi-tap

transformers allowing installers to adjust the ratio by which the transformer drops the voltage on site. Installers can select one of three pre-set tappings – 10%, 8% or 6%. For East Quay Medical Centre Forest Electrical selected a 6% tapping. Should Mains voltage levels on site change significantly this tapping can be adjusted.

Trust Forest Electrical has worked with East Quay Medical Centre for a number of years and it was through this close relationship and prior work assisting with the implementation of a site energy reduction plan that discussions turned to voltage optimisation.

Voltage optimisation was particularly suitable for the site because of its high incoming Mains voltage, which peaked at 247Volts during monitoring.

Specification Forest Electrical initially performed a desktop study for the practice, based on historical electrical usage and its own knowledge of the premises. This enabled it to predict the feasibility of, and potential savings from, voltage optimisation (subject to site monitoring). It predicted an 11.5% saving and a payback period of less than three years.

In depth analysis of the site’s electrical supply

was also required to ensure the correct VO unit was specified. A Sinergy e-Tracker sub-meter was installed without disruption to the incoming supply and left in situ to monitor usage.

Information

obtained during this extensive period of datalogging, found the incoming voltage was high, peaking at 247Volts.

By tracking the 3 phase supply over time, Forest Electrical was also able to obtain sufficient load profile data for the practice.

Choose Lanarkshire promotes the attractions of living and working in Lanarkshire

University’s Fraser of Allander Institute, local entrepreneur Neil MacDonald and renowned Scottish financial journalist Bill Jamieson.

Announcing the campaign Councillor Chris Thompson, chair of South Lanarkshire’s Enterprise Services Committee said: “Choose Lanarkshire is a new business, regeneration and inward investment marketing strategy. It will focus on encouraging growth in companies in Lanarkshire and in key sectors with growth potential.

“Lanarkshire stands out as an excellent place for business due to its prime

location, transport infrastructure, variety and quality of housing and not least our pool of skilled labour.”

Choose Lanarkshire draws on the strengths of partnership working with key

stakeholders including Scottish Enterprise, Business Gateway Lanarkshire, Jobcentre Plus, New College Lanarkshire, Skills Development Scotland, as well as commercial property owners.

A new web site, chooselanarkshire.com has been set up and the campaign has a social media presence through Twitter - @BizLanarkshire.

Cllr Thompson added: “The timing of Choose Lanarkshire could hardly be bettered; it will run in tandem with the £1.13billion City Deal aimed at promoting economic growth in West Central Scotland.

G

rowing Lanarkshire businesses and promoting the attractions of living and working in the area are the focus of a new major marketing campaign launched by Lanarkshire local authorities.

North and South Lanarkshire Councils have joined forces to create Choose Lanarkshire, aimed at assisting local companies to prosper, as well as attracting businesses and entrepreneurs in key growth areas, including life sciences and construction.

The drive was launched at the inaugural Lanarkshire Business Conference, held at the Town House in Hamilton as part of Lanarkshire Business Week.

Around 150 local business people attended the event where speakers included leading Scottish economist Professor Brian Ashcroft of Strathclyde

“Glasgow city and the wider region is undergoing a renaissance; re-emerging as a major centre for economic growth in the UK. The City Deal provides a further opportunity to take another step forward for the local area by providing new jobs and opportunities for the people of Glasgow, the Clyde Valley and Scotland.”

His words were echoed by North Lanarkshire regeneration convener, Councillor David Fagan: “This is an exciting time for everyone involved in promoting economic growth.

“Local authorities have a unique role to play, acting as a catalyst with investors and entrepreneurs alike, as well as partner public bodies and leveraging additional public funding to support new and existing businesses.”
