THAT’S KNOT RIGHT FOLLOWS CHAD HOOVER’S ADVENTURES AS A TELEVISION

KAYAK FISHING’S FIRST REALITY SHOW MAKES WAVES THAT’S SO RIGHT


It started out with a mismatched group of 20-somethings living together in one house. Next there was Big Brother. Then motorcycle builders, gold miners and crab fisherman followed. Now kayak anglers have found their way into reality TV. That’s Knot Right on the Internet channel CarbonTV. com features HOOK1 pro and host of Kayak Bassin’, Chad Hoover’s hi- jinks and adventures at his HOOK1 paddleshop outside Nashville, Ten- nessee. For producer Ken Whiting, creating a reality show around Chad Hoover was a no-brainer. “Chad is one of the funniest, quickest and most pas- sionate people that I ever met,” Whiting explains. “He’s also an incredibly polarizing figure who naturally draws interesting people to him.” Add a high-octane sport of kayak fishing, a crew of rowdy characters, a bustling kayak fishing store and Whiting had a recipe for a great reality show. The first season consisted of six episodes with titles like Hit the Wall,


Shooter and Bathroom. Each episode focuses on events at HOOK1 with Hoover providing philosophical and humorous interludes on diet, fishing and friendship. One episode starts with Hoover licking apple fritter glaze off his fingers while describing his efforts to eat healthy. “I’ll just do an extra jumping jack,” he promises through a mouthful of fritter. Another episode revolves around Hoover’s 15-year-old son, Austin, driving the HOOK1 truck without permission resulting in a fender bender and heart- wrenching confession. “Get-out-of-jail card forever,” Hoover jokes about never allowing his son to drive the truck, “or at least until he’s 25 and his frontal lobe has fully developed.”

For Hoover, the project was a response to his fans. “People wanted more of the non-fishing, funny-stuff from Kayak Bassin’ so we played around with the format and the show evolved.” In fact, the formula provided more drama than Whiting could include in one show. “HOOK1 is a whirlwind of activity and Chad’s life is crazy; capturing all of the moments was dif- ficult with the limited number of cameras,” Whiting admits. Hoover adds, “The challenges were staying authentic, getting the right flow and captur- ing the best stuff.” The results of the premier season have surprised both the star and the


producer. “Most people have really enjoyed the off-the-wall humor, but there are a few that ignore the warning at the beginning of the show,” Whiting admits. The show is rated TVMA with a warning that content is intended for adults. That content includes Hoover watching topless bikini models on his computer when he is supposed to be working and imitating a telephone-salesman who speaks with a heavy accent. Overall, Hoover has been impressed with the positive reaction. “Viewers


latch onto different things,” he says, “I’m like, ‘Ya’ll don’t eat squirrel, too?’” Hoover and Whiting are considering a second season. “That will depend
