Valley Diesel Pictorial

Lehigh

LIGHT RAIL, TRANSIT, AND COMMUTER RAIL NEWS BY GEORGE M. SMERK The Boston Projects

BOSTON WAS THE FIRST U.S. CITY to have a subway rapid transit service and it is still developing. The Massachusetts Bay Trans- portation Authority opened a new station at Assembly Square in Somerville on September 2, 2014. The new station is just north of Sul- livan Square. It is the first new MBTA tran- sit station to enter service since May 4, 1987, when the Orange Line was moved from the elevated track over Washington Street to the Southwest Corridor. The new station is an important transit-ori-

ented development called Assembly Row. This is a very large project with 2.8 million square feet of office space, 1813 homes, and 635,000 square feet devoted to retail, restaurants, and entertainment. There will be public benefits as well, including a waterfront park. The new Assembly Row Station contains all the ideal modern elements expected of a rapid transit station. It is projected that by 2030 Assembly Row Station will be used by between 4800 and 5400 passengers daily. In other news, the MBTA is planning to re-

place all the Type 7 and Type 8 streetcars at the same time. Currently, MBTA has two doz- en Type 9 cars on order. The MBTA attempts to keep its rail rolling stock refreshed, but the cost of new cars is very high, and the process is often slow. If you are not familiar with rail transit

in the Boston region, a visit there will be rewarding. There is an extensive commut- er rail service that is in the process of being expanded by reviving the former Old Colony lines south of Boston. The Red, Orange, and Blue Line rapid transit services have differ- ent types of trains and the equipment is not interchangeable. The Green Line is light rail transit, employing streetcar-type rolling stock. The information is from the excellent magazine Rollsign, published six times a year by the Boston Street Railway Association at P.O. Box 181037, Boston, MA 02118-1037.

Houston Rail Expansion Delayed

Houston, Texas, expected to open two light rail lines by the end of 2014, but that has been postponed to April 2015. Actuall y, the Green and Purple light rail lines were originally set to open in 2012. The two new light rail lines are to join the original very busy line in down- town Houston. The Green and Purple Lines are expected

to cost $1.3 billion. There have been many de- lays, one of the worst of which was when line construction accidentally cut the chilled- water pipe under the tracks, a critical part of the air-conditioning system for Minute Maid Park for the Houston Astros baseball team. To carry out pipe repairs, the track bed and rails had to be torn up, which meant that there has
