Europe’s $3.7 billion ATM upgrade agreed
EUROPEAN COMMISSION has approved the Single Euro- pean Sky air traffic managament ATM Research (SESAR) Deployment Alliance to coordinate and synchronise 3 bil- lion euro ($3.7 billion) worth of upgrades to the continent’s air traffic management infrastructure.
The Alliance is a cross industry partnership made up of four airline groups, operators of 25 airports and 11 air traffic control providers. It has been appointed to the Eu- ropean Commission-mandated role of SESAR deployment manager.
SESAR deployment is a key part of the European Com- mission’s Single European Sky initiative. The initiative will, it is hoped, improve efficiency, lower delays and raise envi- ronmental performance.
The SESAR deployment manager will ensure that new technologies and solutions that have already been tested and validated through the SESAR Joint Undertaking are de- livered into everyday operations across Europe, delivering benefits to both airspace users and the environment. Massimo Garbini, former chief executive officer of Italian air navigation service provider ENAV, has been appointed managing director of the SESAR Deployment Alliance. He says: “We are pleased that the Commission has selected this unique cross-industry collaboration to drive the essen- tial ATM modernisation of European airspace. The SESAR Deployment Alliance will operate initially for six-years.
