I did enjoy watching Great Britain and Europe retain the Ryder Cup once again. It is always good to see our friends from across the water coming second, no matter what the sport. However, I didn’t particularly enjoy

watching the USA post tournament press conference, and feel that Phil Mickelson’s very public criticism of Tom Watson’s captaincy was inappropriate. No matter what he felt, Mickelson should have had his say in the privacy of the locker room when the dust had settled. Mickelson's comments stemmed

from his sitting out both Saturday sessions for the first time in his 20- year Ryder Cup career. Having played 36 holes on the Friday, he had told Watson that he needed a rest and sat out the Saturday morning fourballs. However, he expected that he and partner Keegan Bradley would get the nod for the afternoon foursomes. To his surprise, Watson kept them both on the bench despite Mickelson’s pleas that he and Keegan should play. Someone showing a lot more class than Mickelson was Jim Furyk, who when asked for his opinion during the press conference said that he was good friends with Michelson and respected the work Watson had done, but didn’t think it was wise to get in the middle of it. As for the Great Britain and Europe team, they hardly put a foot wrong over the three days and the credit for that must go to Paul McGinley and his vice-captains. I hope that one of these, Miguel Angel Jimenez, is rewarded with the 2016 captaincy.

Despite his laid back manner,

Jimenez takes his golf very seriously. When he was in danger of missing out on a place in the 2010 Ryder Cup team, he missed his nephew’s wedding so he could play in the Johnnie Walker Classic. Not only did the popular Spaniard make the team, but he flew his nephew and bride to Celtic Manor, explaining this with ‘What better place to have your honeymoon than at the Ryder Cup?’ The man has style! Congratulations to Finland’s Mikko

Ilonen who won the Volvo World Match Play Championship when beating Henrik Stenson in the final at the London Club in October. Ilonen can now look forward to receiving invitations to the four Majors and all other World Golf Championship events. Not bad for someone who once suffered from the dreaded yips when his hands came within ten feet of his putter! Ilonen changed his grip a couple of

years ago, now using a reverse interlocking with his left hand going into the middle of his right hand. "I haven't seen anyone else using it

and I found it completely by accident. I'm trying to eliminate my left hand completely, my left hand is no good and I would cut it off if I could," joked Ilonen. Please don’t try this at home,

children! Happy Hacking! Mulligan
