Unlike concert halls, movie houses and theaters aren’t usually designed to maxi- mize sound quality, and understanding speech requires special consider- ations, even for audience members with normal hear- ing. The main problem is often reflected sound. Very little of the sound from the speakers is heard directly. Nearly all of it is reflected before it reaches our ears, and the material doing the reflecting makes an enor- mous difference. It can either help or greatly hinder our comprehension of words. Venues vary, but a good guess is a seat on the ground floor about two-thirds back from the screen or stage.
