Remarkably, it’s taken over 20 years for the foxy – and efficient – radiused stemhead to travel from IOR designs like Mandrake via the open classes to a full, fire-breathing high-performance superyacht like Ed Dubois’ fabulous-looking new 58m sloop, now in build at Royal Huisman. Imitation is certain to be the sincerest form of flattery…

Dubois designs that we balance perfor- mance with the utmost care with regard to space planning, comfortable living onboard and pleasing aesthetics, all within a thor- oughly seaworthy concept and design. Below the main deck the accommoda- tion is divided into crew forward and owner and guests aft. The owner’s suite includes a large bedroom area, a large bathroom (including a bath and large shower), a study area separate from the bedroom and a sizable gym which has a large opening port allowing fresh air inside

during exercise periods in pleasant weather. Two large guest cabins complete the aft accommodation layout. A large lazarette allows for marine recreational equipment and an especially large tender is stowed forward and con- cealed by the flush deck hatch.

The design of the rig received special attention as it is so crucial, obviously, for performance. In the case of Design 405 we took the bold step of employing a fat-head mainsail which thereby requires running backstays at full hoist. A furling boom will

be employed and the Rondal ‘claw’ system will be used to allow maximum variation in mainsail foot tension. This will be useful when reefing in cruising mode when the mainsail can be hoisted to the point where it will still be possible to tack and gybe without employing the running backstays; meaning they can be set up permanently. All in all, the rig is designed for efficiency, employing the highest level of sail technology together with the best in current mast and rigging design. This new yacht takes advantage of the extraordinary development that has gone into sailing superyacht design and pure racing yacht design over the past 10 years. It also draws on our own 38 years of expe- rience as professional yacht designers and relies heavily on the lengthy experience and peerless construction expertise from Royal Huisman Shipyard.
