The Great Big Tuna Adventure

fishrap.com By Bob Vanian

This fishing season continues to march on in fine fashion as anglers continue to score big numbers of yellowfin tuna, that are mixed with catches of dorado, yellowtail and skipjack. Those target- ing striped marlin have been finding some of the best marlin fishing in recent years as well. What makes it extra special is that exotic species sel- dom seen in Southern California waters such as wahoo and blue marlin have been in the picture lately as well. You never know when something wild and crazy is going to happen in getting

a bite from a wahoo or blue marlin. Most of the yellowfin tuna have been in the 8 to 25 pound range with an occasional larger fish to 40 pounds occasionally found in the mix. The dorado have been nice sized fish that have been running from seven to 30 pounds with most in the 12 to 25 pound range. The offshore yellowtail have mostly been 3 to 5 pound fish with some better numbers of bigger yellows to 20 pounds showing in the mix in recent days. There have been five wahoo caught

that I know of and I would guess there have been others. Their numbers

Phoenix Channel 5 weather- man Chris Dunn caught this large tuna earlier this month while aboard the Spirit of Adventure. During a five-day fishing trip that took them to Cortes Bank, Tanner Bank, San Clemente, Catalina Island and Pyramid Head, several bluefin and yel- lowfin were caught aboard the Spirit of Adventure.

SAN DIEGO REPORT

Yellowfin, bluefin, dorado, marlin and yellowtail bites continue

might be increasing as there have been four wahoo caught over the past three days. Two wahoo were weighed in at the Dana Point Fuel Dock on Sept. 19 and one was weighed in at The Marlin Club in San Diego on Sept. 21. Private boater John Ohanian of

Wayne Moulden’s private boat GW reported a wahoo they caught while fishing into the east of the Mackerel Bank. This was one of the fish weighed in at Dana Point on Sept. 19. Ohanian reported that the angler was Paul Bunkers and said that Wayne Moulden was at the helm. The wahoo weighed 47.3 pounds when weighed in at the Dana Point Fuel Dock and it bit a Zuker marlin jig. Fuel Dock reported weighed in anoth- er wahoo on Sept. 19 in addition to the one weighed in by GW. This fish was caught on the private boat Otter Pop and weighed 43.5 pounds. The angler was Rick Town and the fish bit on a Rapala. The wahoo was thought to have been caught while fishing about 14 miles outside of Dana Point on a course to the 277 Spot. On Sept. 21, private boater Capt.

Bob Woodard, Jr., of Dropback was out looking for marlin outside of the mid-

dle part of the 9 Mile Bank. He did not have any luck with the marlin but while trolling home across the middle part of the inside of the 9 Mile Bank he caught a 39.8 pound wahoo. The fish was weighed in at The Marlin Club and it bit on a blue and orange color Maurader. Later that same day a wahoo was reported to have been caught about 35 miles from Point Loma by a boat fishing at the Upper Hidden Bank.

The tuna action has been found in many ways with trolling strikes, kelp paddies, spots of puddling fish, meter marks, working tern birds, porpoise schools and spots of breaking fish all leading to action. Sometimes skippers also report action by simply stopping the boat and drifting around some of the high spots at some of the banks that are holding fish. Some of the best areas for the tuna

fishing are the 277 Spot, the 209 Spot, the 289 Spot, the 312 Spot, the 181 Spot, the 182 Spot, the 224 Spot, the 302 Spot and the 371 Bank. Another productive area for yellowfin has been for boats drifting the 200 fathom curve off Pyramid Head at San Clemente Island.
