PNEUMATICS & HYDRAULICS  PRODUCTS CONTROLLING PRESSURE

Water authorities need to control the supply pressure in their potable water pipeline networks to meet user demand and to reduce water leaks. For this, Rotork Australia has supplied more than 150 Rotork CVL500 linear control valve actuators with adaptation for fitting to pilot valves for the Sydney water supply network. The actuators were supplied to NetWorks Alliance, a collaboration formed by Sydney

Water to deliver a programme aimed at reducing leaks and main breaks from the city’s 21,000km water supply network. Typically, spring pressure in a pilot valve is modulated over

a 1-4mm stroke. This controls the output of the pilot valve which, in turn, controls the pipeline pressure. Network pressure can range from 15m to over 90m head. The CVL500 actuator enables very accurate control of the network in increments of 0.4m of head pressure. For the Sydney Water network this is an improvement on the previous coarse control resolution of up to 7m head. Using a PID control loop, the actuator provides repeatable and reliable ongoing pressure control. Of additional benefit, the actuator is housed in an IP68 enclosure so can operate in a flooded pit. With the actuator only low power 24V DC or 240V mains

is needed, and it also uses Bluetooth to enable remote configuration and monitoring.

The modular valve body of Bürkert’s latest INOX space saving modular valve bodies has increased the flow coefficient of a conventional angle seat valve, reducing energy requirements and improving system flow characteristics. With the modular basic body, the inlet level and outlet level are separate; and,

as the fluid flow now only has to be redirected once through 180˚, this increases the flow coefficient. Furthermore, the inlet and outlet level can now be connected directly with other valve bodies, without additional piping; and the connections of the basic bodies can be assembled in a block and designed according to requirements. A pipe connection between the single valves is no longer necessary as the fluid connection is established simply by joining the valve bodies. The concept was developed under the

premise of ‘mass customisation’ so that it also allows the cost-effective production of customised solutions in small batches. In this case several valve bodies can be joined to form a block using orbital welding technology, resulting in a strong compact block that can receive valve actuators and peripheral items direct to their own ports. The bodies can be combined with standard Bürkert valve actuator heads, which in turn can be used with a position indicator or positioner. In addition, it is possible to integrate sensors for measuring flow rate, temperature and pressure.
