❖ Higher Launch- More Ball Speed www.adamsgolf.com

winter I swap it for the 2 iron version (16 degrees).

So, first thoughts on the Adams Pro hybrid - I liked the matt finish of the head and how it sat behind the ball and it felt very comfortable in my hands. The Pro hybrid uses both Adams Velocity Slot and Cut-Thru technologies, which are meant to channel more energy to the ball and optimise launch, spin and ball speed, even on off-centre hits. One thing I wasn’t particularly keen on was the way the face looked ‘open’ at address – this is due to the face grooves (very noticeable in white) moving further away from the top line of the club as it flairs out towards the toe. This is accentuated by the ‘velocity slot’ on the top of the club being parallel with the top edge. It’s only a small feature, but for someone with a tendency to push/fade, it didn’t instill a lot of confidence that it was going to be easy to get my customary draw! When I started hitting shots, I found the

Adams to be heavier in feel to the TaylorMade Rescue I was used to. This wasn’t unpleasant, just different, but it did have an effect on swing speed and feeling as though I had to ‘muscle’ the strike. The result though, was impressive. Flight was much lower than the TaylorMade,

and the ball went forever! You certainly know when you’ve hit one out of the centre as the ball speed off the face is frightening and it disappears away from you at alarming speed. On firm fairways the roll at the end of the

flight was exceptional, and with the 20 degree I averaged 248 yards from 10 strikes. Off centre hits are rewarded with somewhat of a ‘dead’ feel and there is obviously a drop off in distance, but not as much as you may expect. It’s also easy to shape, which surprised me bearing in mind my comments about not being comfortable with the ‘open’ look of the face – it didn’t have an effect on me shaping it either way with ease. One thing I did find is that it was difficult to replicate the high, soft landing shot I prefer onto firm greens in the summer. I had to make quite a lot of swing and set up changes to replicate the shot. This is not a big issue, but one I feel would lend the club more to low handicap players

who are able to do this than those looking for ‘easy to

hit from any lie’ hybrids and who want a naturally high ball flight.

SUMMARY: The Adams Pro

Hybrid is undoubtedly a nice looking club which delivers high ball speed and very long distance for a hybrid, especially off the tee. Easy to hit and shape, I’d recommend it to club members anywhere, but especially to lower handicap players.
