The summer brought many stories of pupils excelling in both sporting and academic fi elds. Derby High School pupil Becky Jones


(above) achieved top marks in her GCSE exams despite a gruelling swimming schedule. Becky managed fi ve A*s, three As and two Bs as well as spending 10 days in Zambia teaching schoolchildren to


swim alongside her sporting idols Rebecca Adlington, Joanne Jackson, Ross Davenport and Melanie Marshall. She also represented England in the Tri-Nations Challenge competition in Glasgow, and took part in the National Youth Championships. Becky’s training schedule involves up to 16 hours’ pool time a week, with 4.30am starts. Elsewhere, Westonbirt School pupil Emily Brooks toured with the England lacrosse team to this summer’s World Championship in Colorado, USA. Emily juggled her GCSE studies and her love of sport to achieve 10 A*s and one A while also going on tour to the USA this summer. At Nottingham Girls’ High School, meanwhile, Rosie Rudin (left) became the new World School Games champion in the 400m Individual Medley. Her rigorous swimming regime didn’t affect her studies as she also achieved eight A*


BRENTWOOD CELEBRATES OUTSTANDING YEAR


A record-breaking year has seen Brentwood Preparatory School fi eld four teams in National Finals, in the process winning the Brentwood and District (large school) competitions in swimming, athletics, cross-country and netball, and lifting the district football cup. The school, which offers some 17 different sports to its pupils, counts former Chelsea and England football captain Frank Lampard, Essex county cricketer Kishen Velani and cricket commentator and sports journalist Ralph Dellor among its alumni. Headmaster Jason Whiskerd said: “It has been another strong year for sport in the Prep. This level of success does not come by chance – it is the result of hours of practice and dedication. “It is our mission for as many pupils as possible to play as many sports as possible. This is a work in progress but, compared with many similar schools, we punch well


19 other schools to win the Brentwood School’s Prep Sports.


Elsewhere, the cross country teams triumphed again in the Chelmsford Area Winter League, Brentwood District Championships and London Schools’ event, while Brentwood’s netball team won the district league, as well as taking part in an Under 11 tournament in La Manga, Spain.

The Under 11 football team were very competitive and fi nished the season with a victory in the District Cup, as well as a third-place fi nish in the regional IAPS tournament. The Under 10 team beat


and one A in her GCSEs. Rosie now hopes to make it to the Rio Olympics in 2016. Finally, Northampton High School’s Emily Kilner (above) achieved A*s in all her subjects while playing hockey at a national level. Emily was selected to play for England under 16 girls hockey team last year and has been playing across England and Europe whilst studying for her exams.
