Matlab Expo 2014 is expected to attract more than 500 engineers and scientists to an intensive one-day session


T


he annual Matlab Expo for 2014 in the United Kingdom will take place on 7 October at Silverstone in Northamptonshire.


In the Silverstone Wing, the purpose-built conferencing and event facility at the race circuit, more than 500 people are expected to attend master classes on data analytics, model verification and validation, simulation performance, and application development. Tere will also be an exhibition including interactive demonstrations from MathWorks and partner organisations. Among the keynote presentations, Andy


Richardson from Jaguar Land Rover will discuss ‘Redesigning how we engineer tomorrow’s vehicles’. As head of simulation at the company, Richardson is responsible for Jaguar Land Rover’s simulation strategy and building leading-edge capability in computer-aided engineering for all vehicle systems and attributes. Among other achievements, he led a multinational, cross-brand team – with Ford of Europe, Volvo, and Jaguar – to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in CAE process cycle time. Richardson will discuss the massive changes underway in the fundamental

architecture and engineering of cars, ranging from: the power units; how vehicles are used by customers; cars that can drive themselves; to the use of vehicles as communication and entertainment hubs. Vehicles have become highly complex interdependent control systems that must interact safely and securely with their occupants and the environment. As a result, more whole- vehicle and coupled-systems analysis is being carried out earlier in the design process, and this in turn is making extra demands on simulation tools, methods, processes, people,

and IT hardware. Richardson will outline the approach Jaguar Land Rover is taking to tackle these challenges. BAE Systems Naval Ships is the leading


provider of surface ships and through-life support for the UK Ministry of Defence, employing over 7,000 people in the UK. Current projects include Type 26 Frigate, Type 45 Destroyer, and the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraſt Carriers. Peter Worthington and Howard Williams from the company will discuss how Naval Ships have used both Matlab and Simulink to support


various aspects of the naval design and integration process. Examples include: the development of a marine engineering trainer to support Type 45; a shock mounting design assessment tool to support the design installation of naval equipment; and a dynamic modelling and simulation framework, an addition to the Combat System Engineering Data Framework, that allows a Combat System Integrated Product Team to assess the dynamic performance of an evolving ship design at varying levels of system composition and complexity. In a slightly different vein, Selex ES, in


conjunction with Owlstone, has developed a novel hand-held device for the detection of toxic industrial chemicals, exploiting the benefits of Ultra High Field Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometry (UH-FAIMS). Alison Lucie and Ross McLaren from Selex ES will describe how Matlab was used extensively in the development of this product – from early concept development (sensor performance modelling and early investigation of algorithmic concepts), through extensive large-scale analysis of training data and algorithm prototyping, to the deployment of the data processing algorithms onto the system’s architecture. Aſter the opening plenary session,


the event will have four parallel tracks, encompassing two sessions dealing with applications in industry, an introductory track for those relatively new to the subject and a master class to deepen the expertise of those who are already running the soſtware.
