75573 FABRIC MEMORY BOOKS: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration by Lesley Riley
For years, artists have been combining paper and fabric into books - telling stories with paragraphs of pattern, words of thread, and punctuation of trim and
ephemera. With this unusual volume, you can combine your love of crafting, fabric and reading to create unique volumes for preserving your memories. The 24 projects detailed here feature a variety of binding methods as well as inventive techniques like transferring photographs on to textiles and making photo transfers. You do not have to follow them slavishly. If you prefer they will provide wonderful starting points for your own distinctive designs. The volume is divided into two parts. The first one investigates the basics of book making, the use of materials both old and new, the arts of story-telling and composition. The second describes both unbound and pre-bound books, as well as accordion folded, button-bound, button-jointed, and sewn-binding books, and alternatives to these. Your heart must warm to an author who advises: ‘If a line you intended to sew straight turns out crooked, try sewing another crooked line, turning the crooked line into an intentional design element!’ 127 paperback pages 25.5cm x 21.5cm lavishly illus in colour, with
metric conversion charts.

75576 GARDEN MOSAICS: 19 Beautiful Mosaic Projects For Your Garden
by Emma Biggs and Tessa Hunkin
One of the most striking of the 19 designs is a three dimensional mosaic of the Egyptian cat goddess Bast in an intense turquoise that
resembles lapis lazuli. It is made from a dense polystyrene foam that is very light, easy to cut and stable under outdoor conditions. It is available from hardware stores in sheet form that can be glued together to form workable blocks and is an excellent base for exterior mosaic sculptures. There are templates at the back to make the blue cat, the tree and two beasts design, the night and day roundel, the flying jay bird wall plaque, the bird bath and each template can be enlarged or reduced on the photocopier as required, starting with a simple house number tiled plaque. The garden seat is ingenious, made from concrete slabs with a granite polished square on top for the seat and mosaics down the side. There are designs with a series of geometric circles for panels and table tops, and, as seen all over Spain, slate designs of flowers etc for paving stones. Relatively inexpensive to make, the book has a big colour photo of the finished design, dozens of step- by-step colour photos, big clear instructions, lists of equipment, laying techniques, tools required and hints about marble, stone and pebbles. 128 large page softback.

Toilet Paper by Richard Smyth By the early 14th century the Chinese toilet paper industry was booming, with 15,000 sheets recorded as being supplied to the court of the despotic Emperor Hongwu in 1393. We in the West lagged behind in our methods of posterior polishing. Leaves, mussel-shells, corn-cobs, a goose’s neck (honestly!) and all manner of uncomfortable-sounding items were pressed into service, until in 1870 recognisable loo-roll was reinvented in New York as a quack remedy for piles. Henry VIII’s most trusted court confidant was the Groom of the Stool, charged with wiping the royal rear. 123pp, cartoon illus. £10 NOW £4.50
