Burston Strike School Centenary year celebrations

Sunday 7 September, Burston, Norfolk

Join the NASUWT to commemorate 100 years since the ‘longest strike in history’ and celebrate trade union rights.

In 1914, teachers Kitty and Tom Higdon were sacked from Burston Village School for their trade union activity. Pupils walked out in support and from then until 1939 the Higdons ran the ‘strike school’, providing an education for local children.

The event will hear from a range of speakers and will include entertainment from the NASUWT Riverside Band.

Celebrating trade unionism

The NASUWT has commemorated some of the most historic struggles in the formation of the trade union movement at a series of events this summer.

The Union was represented at the Chainmakers’ Festival in the West Midlands, the Durham Miners’ Gala, in Durham and the Tolpuddle Festival in Dorset.

Each event celebrates the history of the trade union movement, the bravery and commitment of its founders and the continuing contribution which trade unions make to the lives of workers every day.

The NASUWT Riverside Band was on hand to provide a musical accompaniment to proceedings and led the traditional parade of trade union banners at Tolpuddle and Durham. The full reports will be in the next edition of Teaching Today.
