Chris Keates re-elected as General Secretary

Chris Keates has been re-elected as NASUWT General Secretary.

Ms Keates has been re-elected for a third term of office. This is the third time she has been re-elected unopposed. Chris was the candidate elected by the National Executive and received nominations from across the UK.

She has served as General Secretary since 2004, having joined the staff of the NASUWT in 1998 after previously holding a number of lay elected roles within the Union and working as a secondary school teacher in Birmingham for over 25 years.

Geoff Branner, President of the NASUWT, said:

“To be re-elected unopposed is an overwhelming endorsement of Chris’s hard work on behalf of NASUWT members and a tribute to her leadership qualities and negotiating skills.

“With the re-election of Chris as NASUWT General Secretary, the Union can be confident of being in the best position to secure further improvements for members.”

Ms Keates said: “I feel very privileged to be re-elected as General Secretary of the largest and leading teachers’ union.

“The continuing support I have received from the National Executive, Local Associations and members means a great deal to me and I am most grateful for it.

“These are very challenging times for the teaching profession. Now more than ever it is critical that they have a strong union like the NASUWT to champion their cause.

“I will continue to do my very best to ensure the NASUWT goes from strength to strength, improving the working lives of all teachers, so that they in turn can provide a quality education for the children they teach.”

INDEPENDENT SCRUTINEERS’ REPORT OF UNCONTESTED ELECTION FOR POSITION OF NASUWT GENERAL SECRETARY 2014.

At the close of nominations at noon on 2nd June 2014, the following candidate, as the only nomination received for the vacancy, was deemed to have been elected unopposed: Chris KEATES

As Scrutineers appointed in accordance with Section 49 of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 (as amended), we are satisfied as to each of the matters specified in subsection 52(2) with regard to the election.

The person appointed under Section 51A was Electoral Reform Services Limited.

Section 49(3) requires the scrutineer to inspect the register of names and addresses of the members of the trade union whenever it appears appropriate to do so or when requested to do so under the conditions specified in subsection 3(A). It was not deemed appropriate, at this time, to inspect the register and no requests to inspect the register were received.

We would draw your attention to Sections 52(4), 52(5) and 52(6). Section 52(4) requires that a copy of this report be published and made available to all members of the union within a three-month period from today. This does not, however, mean that every member has to be notified individually.

USA Scholarship Opportunity

A chance to take a study to visit the USA to explore the American education system is on offer to NASUWT members. The Walter Hines Page Scholarship offers teachers the opportunity to spend two weeks visiting a number of American towns and cities to study a specific aspect of the American education system which interests them and is relevant to their job.

Organised by the English Speaking Union (ESU), the programme aims to promote the exchange of ideas, understanding and knowledge between Britain and the USA.

Research by previous scholars has included studies into educational provision for autistic pupils and approaches to teaching students with English as an additional language. Scholars receive a grant to fund their trip and their itinerary is co-ordinated by the ESU. The ESU also provides accommodation and a cultural programme.

Scholars must take their trip during the American school year which runs from October 2015 to May 2016 and must submit a report within one month of their return. Two scholarships are on offer to NASUWT members.

To apply, members will be required to provide a research proposal to the NASUWT which gives clear and detailed information on the following:

NASUWT membership and activity, e.g. school representative, local officer posts held etc;

the subject of the proposed study;

detail enlarging upon the reason for the choice of the study area and how you intend to conduct it;

the extent to which you have already identified contacts or have knowledge of projects (academics and schools in the USA that you would like to visit during the course of the scholarship); and

the intended potential use of the study in your own professional development and/or informing policy and practice within your school/local authority or the education service generally.

Applicants should also provide a recent professional reference/testimonial and four passport-sized photographs bearing the applicant’s name on the back.

The NASUWT will compile a shortlist of candidates who will be required to attend an interview at the ESU in London to select the successful applicants.

The closing date for applications is Monday 24 November 2014.

For an application pack, email education@mail.nasuwt.org.uk quoting your NASUWT membership number.
