We were sad to hear the news of the deaths of Margaret Ann ‘Midge’ Paxton, Tom Paxton’s wife and muse, on 1st June aged 69; of Hindustani classical songstress Dhondutai Kulkarni on 1st June aged 87; of US pedal steel guitarist and session giant Weldon Myrick, on 2nd June, aged 76; of the Assamese singer-musician Khagen Mahanta, on 12th June, aged 72; of folk singer, writer and journalist Charlotte Greig, on 27th June aged 60.


BBC Radio 3’s World On 3 has programmes live from Womad on Friday 25th July (11pm – 1am), Saturday 26th (10.20 pm – 1am) and Sunday 27th (2 – 3pm and 10pm – 12.30am). Then on subsequent Fridays at 11pm it comes live from Glasgow’s BBC @ The Quay with Bellowhead, 9Bach, Shooglenifty and Jarlath Henderson on 1st August, with further weeks hosted by Lopa Kothari and Mary Ann Kennedy including Mose Fan Fan on 22nd August.

Eliza is the first of her generation to have her contribution to the current thriving traditional music scene acknowledged in this way – and, uniquely, joins her parents, Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy, who were each similarly honoured in 2003 and 1998 respectively.

A Fiend In The Furrows is a three-day conference in association with the School Of English and the Institute For Collaborative Research In The Humanities at Queen’s University Belfast, exploring ‘folk horror’ in British and Irish literature, film, television, and music.
