REDEFINE THE ROLE OF STORAGE

Connect with Experts

Organizations across the entire healthcare industry face the daunting challenge of managing, securing, and extracting value from an ever-growing mountain of data. For example, medical professionals want extensive patient data to improve outcomes. So how can IT departments keep pace with accessibility and compliance requirements while operating within a realistic budget? In this edition of Connect with Experts, we discuss how smarter storage modernization, data protection, and storage optimization strategies can help you support the changing role of data in healthcare.

Modernize, Optimize, and Protect Healthcare Data

Q: HOW HAS THE ROLE OF STORAGE EVOLVED, AND WHAT FACTORS ARE DRIVING THAT CHANGE?

Kurt Hildebrand, Storage Practice Director, PC Connection, Inc. A: Over the past12 years or so, I’ve seen a lot of dramatic changes happen. As my career has developed and migrated through diff erent elements of the data center, I’ve defi nitely seen how storage crosses over and impacts a wide range of data center technologies and

applications. It’s all about data these days. Everything is about getting the data, using the data, and extracting the value out of it.

Q: HOW HAS THE DISCUSSION AROUND STORAGE CHANGED DURING PROJECT PLANNING?

A: Originally, when I was in the information systems fi eld...I don’t want to say storage was necessarily just an afterthought or an add-on, but it was defi nitely something that was secondary to a lot of other concerns, like the application, or the servers, or the network infrastructure. But now there’s a lot of opportunities that are really storage led or data driven.

IMPROVE CARE WITH SMARTER STORAGE

Modern storage can increase capacity, reduce cost per gigabyte, and boost the performance of your data center.

We offer a three-level Storage Modernization and Refresh Toolset (S.M.A.R.T.) designed to identify and evaluate the benefits your unique environment will achieve through storage modernization. Ask us how we can apply our S.M.A.R.T. methodology to your data center, and supply you with the justification for smarter storage.

Q: WHAT IS STORAGE MODERNIZATION AND WHY IS IT SUCH AN IMPORTANT TOPIC FOR ORGANIZATIONS SEEKING A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE?

A: When we talk about storage modernization, what we’re really saying is that the technology—with regard to how data is stored for access and usage—is going through a radical paradigm shift right now in the industry. For most of my career in IT, storage has been all about magnetic storage—spinning magnetic disks. And everything for the past several decades has been based on this entire concept of a spinning disk, disk geometries, and all these other things that play into the challenges getting bits and bytes into and out of a device that stores them.

But now we’re getting into a realm where that entire concept is being turned on its head. And there are two primary reasons for that. One is the growth of the use of fl ash storage media, because the price and performance come into alignment with what organizations can now aff ord to procure. The second is the concept of the cloud—that is to say, it’s no longer an asset that necessarily I have to own. It’s just a place where my data lives. It’s a repository. How and where that particular data is being stored is really no longer my concern. It’s just about
