The last tournament that

I won was the 1986 Masters on the Tour, and 1996 on

the Champions Tour. And here we are 17 years beyond that, and you’re still asking me questions. So that’s really

very fl attering to me. –JACK NICKLAUS

Jack Nicklaus tees off on the seventh hole at Pebble Beach during the 1961 U.S. Amateur.

What does the name change to Nicklaus Club-Monterey mean to you? The original Nicklaus Club that we did in China was Nicklaus Club Beijing. It’s probably the most successful new venture that’s been done in China. I’m fl attered that I was asked to

have the name changed. I love the Monterey Peninsula as you know, and of course, I love Pebble Beach. And to be out that close to heaven, it’s a nice thing to do.

Jack Nicklaus has won each professional major at least three times.

How proud are you of what you have accomplished as a designer? I feel very proud of a lot of the things we’ve done. I’ve done golf courses all over the world (36 coun- tries, 39 U.S. states). I’ve been doing it since 1968. To be able to take the expression of what I feel about a golf course and be able to put it on a piece of ground that lives here long beyond my golf game—which has since disappeared—and my lifetime, it’s a pretty neat thing. You can stay in the game of golf all your life and go from playing to doing design. The last tournament

that I won was the 1986 Masters on the Tour, and 1996 on the Champi- ons Tour. And here we are 17 years beyond that, and you’re still asking me questions. So that’s really very fl attering to me.

Is there something about Cali- fornia that speaks to you as a designer? Well I think you’ve got great land. You’ve got great weather. You’ve got great variety of weather too. Some places are wet, some are dry. You’ve got the desert, you’ve got the coastline. You’ve got all kinds of things. I’ve always thought the va- riety was stimulating. I love playing out here. I won a lot of golf tourna- ments in California. I love playing out here because it stimulated me.

We are putting the 1929 Bobby Jones, 1953 Ben Hogan and 2000 Tiger Woods into a foursome. You’re the fourth player. What year do you bring to compete with those three? I don’t know. I suppose 1972 or 1975. My best time was from ages 30 to probably 38. Obviously I did fairly well at 40. A
