COMPLEX RENEWABLE ENERGY ROOF SYSTEM The new system will contribute to

the supply of electricity from the Energy Centre to the 2,900 homes in the neighbouring village of Cranbrook, reducing carbon emissions by 82 tonnes a year. The village is one of the largest low carbon communities in the UK. The Energy Centre was designed

with a curved roof that required a specialist mounting system that would not penetrate the roof. TGE Group designed and installed the 250kWp system using 1,063

Trina 235W solar panels mounted on a new system based on a Euroclad fastening, to maintain the warranty of the new roof. The installation was subject to a

number of strict guidelines and a number of high level SHE (safety, health and environmental) inspections carried out during the installation due to adverse weather conditions and restricted access to the working site. The work was carried out by TGE Group, a company that provides

SOLAR PANELS INSTALLED TO REDUCE COSTS

Water sites are part of a programme to increase the amount of renewable energy the public utility generates while reducing carbon emissions. The Scottish Water solar panels

Solar panels are being installed to help reduce energy costs at six water treatment works across Scotland. The installations at Scottish

are each capable of generating up to 0.2GWh of electricity per year– which provides up to 25% of the power needed to power the water treatment works dependant on the size of the works in question. Scottish Water already has four

‘self-sufficient water treatment works – in that they produce more

energy than they actually use, using hydro turbines in pipes. The company generates 28GWh

of the 450GWh of electricity it needs every year to help provide essential water and waste services across Scotland, and has ambitions to significantly increase this through a variety of technologies. Small- scale wind turbines have also been installed on a number of sites, largely in the Highlands and Islands. Scottish Water www.scottishwater.co.uk

Plumb Center has launched its manifesto at the House of Commons, which sets out a series of policy recommendations with the aim of creating a more energy conscious society. The manifesto includes plans designed to support consumers, the industry and the government to meet the combined goals of greater energy and water efficiency.

s Spring arrives it will soon bring the milder weather,

increasing the need for air conditioning. In line with this we have a focus on air conditioning in this issue. We also explore the highlights of NEMEX at Sustainability Live and the latest features of the show. Energy Management systems are an integral part of facility management, also covered here. Utilities are an expensive

commodity and we also have a focus on some cost effective tips to purchasing energy, along with a focus on Monitoring & Metering Systems, Data Collection and Bio Energy

Energy management firm Utilitywise has launched a new reporting platform that gives energy users unprecedented insight and clarity into the way their organisation is using energy and water. Utility Insight converts the data

feeds from utility meters, sub- meters, Utilitywise’s OBox and Edd:e

systems into easy-to-understand information that can be viewed on any computer with web access. The company says the platform is

a response to customer demands for specific, real-time information about energy usage across their organisation. The service is operated in tandem

with a Utilitywise energy consultant who will advise on how best to act on the data, including energy-saving tips. Utilitywise www.utilitywise.com

Online learning offers an accessible and flexible path to further education and resources and the Energy University’s Professional Energy Manager programme aims to do just this. This course has been specifically developed with the acclaimed Institute of Energy Professionals (IEP), the longest running energy education program in the U.S. So with PEM energy- focused individuals can earn a highly marketable and respected credential in the growing field of energy management.

The new eco-alert system from Energy & Environmental Systems provides users with instant warnings about faults in their heating systems. This system offers remote access

from a computer along with graphics and data that show how a heating system is working. It sends, by text or email, instant fault warnings flagging issues such as boiler/pump failure; temperature variations; water

temperatures for legionella prevention; and unauthorised tampering. Fault reports are fully flexible and

can be tailored to meet a particular users needs. Remote management and fault alerts have proved to be invaluable to those responsible for managing heating systems. They enable executives to concentrate upon urgent problems. eco- eclipse www.eco-eclipse.com

A new smart meter installer training centre has opened in Newcastle and is considered to be one of the first of its kind to open in the north east of England. Energy services company, Future

Energy Solutions, has invested £100,000 into the new centre which has created six new jobs and is expected to create new employment opportunities for up to 2,000 trained engineers over the next five years. The centre offers accredited training to those wishing to become smart meter installers. Up to 400 candidates will be trained every year.
