“A pike!” he shouted, his voice quavering with
trepidation knowing the toothy fish could draw blood. “What should I do?” Even though Micah’s fish was barely a keeper,
the creature still had sharp teeth on its jaws and tongue, even the roof its mouth. “How do I get the fly out?” asked Micah, wide-
eyed. His dad swooped in with a pair of pliers. While Jack worked the olive and brown Clouser out of the bear trap, Micah held the slimy fish like a loaf of moldy bread. When Jack finally yanked the fly from the pike’s
mouth, the fish arched upward and took a swipe at Micah’s nose. “Slimy thing!” cursed Micah, trying to regain
his grasp on the slippery pike, which wiggled and flopped then squirted from the teenager’s hands and disappeared into the inky water. “Dang! That was more exciting than a bass!” ex-

icah, my stepson, wanted to catch a badass bass in Long Lake, an appropriately named
14-mile-long body of water that stretches through central Adirondack Park in upstate New York. The first night of our three-day, 36-mile kayak trip, we camped near the outlet of the lake where it enters the Raquette River. Micah, age 18, had
caught many trout, but he had limited experience with warm-water species. The next morning, we were fly fishing the mouth
of the Raquette for smallies and largemouth. I glanced at Micah about 50 yards away; he looked to be pulling in his fifth bass since we launched a half-hour earlier. He definitely had a hot rod.
