REMEHA BOILERS HELP CUT CARBON AT TV’S ANIMAL CLINIC

nergy-efficient remeha boilers are playing a key role in helping reduce carbon emissions at one of the world’s leading veterinary institutions, the university of liverpool’s school of Veterinary science. the university’s three state-of-the-art animal hospitals are located on the large, rural leahurst campus on the Wirral. to help meet its steep carbon reduction target of 36 per cent by 2020 (compared to a baseline of 2005), liverpool university took the decision to replace the two ageing dual fuel pressure jet boilers serving its large and small animal Hospitals and main administration building with modern, high efficiency condensing boilers. brian Jones at mouchel technology

m&e services specified two remeha Gas 210 eco Pro condensing boilers to guarantee the reliable delivery of energy-efficient heating and hot water. the reduced footprint of the remeha Gas 210 eco Pro also allowed the university to carry out a redesign of the pipework and pumps layout for easier future access and maintenance of the plant.

the university of liverpool’s Veterinary

Field station is renowned globally for its work on equine, farm animals and domestic pets. as filming for channel 5’s ‘ben Fogle’s animal clinic’ series wrapped at the leahurst campus, the redesign and refurbishment of its heating system began ahead of the winter months. For the wellbeing and comfort of the animals, professional vets and students, installation contractor ellesmere engineering carried out the installation around one of the old boilers, thereby ensuring continuous heat delivery throughout the replacement process. Peter birch, engineering services

manager at liverpool university commented: “the installation of the new boilers was carried out on time and on budget. these new boilers will go a long way to helping this site play its part in the university’s overall carbon reduction campaign and will provide highly efficient heating and hot water facilities at this important veterinary facility for many years to come.” the two Gas 210 eco Pro boilers

DAIKIN TO LAUNCH ‘REVOLUTIONARY’ NEW AIR CONDITIONING TECHNOLOGY AT EXHIBITION

it is also understood the innovation will have a significant impact on design and installation time, as well as the long-term flexibility of buildings.

aikin uK will unveil the development, and explain what it means for building specifiers, owners, installers and occupants, on its stand in Hall 9 at the nec, from 11 to 13 February, 2014. other important innovations being seen for the first time at the show include Dynamic noise control (Dnc), a system that automatically adjusts the sound output from a chiller so that it cannot exceed a pre-set limit. the pioneering technology, developed jointly by cool-therm and italian manufacturer Geoclima, enables chillers to meet the increasingly strict requirements of planners and end users, without significantly impacting cooling capacity or efficiency.

D 28 Visitors to the show will also be able to

get up-to-speed with a new type of ultra- efficient defrost system for refrigerators and freezers. the innovative Flash Defrost system, developed by new company Frigesco, uses a phase-change material to harness energy produced by the condenser to defrost evaporators, saving around 27 per cent in cold store and cabinet running costs. other innovations on display will

include: • the latest low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants and drop-in blends;

• a new range of high efficiency screw compressors from bitzer;

• new condensers from Gea searle that operates with a smaller refrigerant charge and use less material;

• new humidifier technology from carel, the humisonic, that is claimed to cut energy use by 90 per cent;

• a completely redesigned range of Zanotto cold room coolers from aFr refrigeration;

Public sector sustainability • Volume 4 issue 1

• a lokring jointing system for use with aluminium tube;

• new heat exchange coils from lordan, based on a patented triple 7 pattern for improved performance.

as well as being able to see the latest

technology, visitors have free access to the industry’s top experts, with 38 seminar sessions covering topical business and technical issues. as the High street supermarkets continue their push for more sustainable stores, a key seminar entitled “the greening of the supermarkets” will update visitors on the latest developments in the rapidly evolving food retail sector. as part of this, bill Watson, head of refrigeration at the co-op Group, will give an update on the company’s plans to reduce energy use in stores and harness the latest environmentally responsible refrigerants. Visitors can pre-register to attend the show via the show website, with free access to seminars on a first-come, first- served basis. For more details on visiting,
