With miles of natural white sand beaches, Lake McConaughy is Nebraska’s largest lake. 20 miles long and 4 miles wide at full storage, Lake McConaughy is the ideal destination for camping, fishing and all types of water sports.
The area is also considered one of the best places in the country to bird watch, boasting 363 species including bald eagles and sandhill cranes seasonally. The Lake McConaughy Visitor and Water Interpretive Center is available to host small meetings and events, and includes a state of the art 50 seat theater. Nearby Ogallala is known as Nebraska’s Cowboy Capital, and offers a window into the historic Oregon
Trail and Texas Trail eras through attractions such as Boot Hill Cowboy Cemetery and the Mansion on the Hill Museum, a beautiful Victorian show home. Ogallala is also home to the unique Petrified Wood and Art Gallery, which contains world class collections of ancient woods, artwork, and Native American artifacts. Ogallala offers a variety of shopping opportunities, from antiques and collectibles to boutique clothing and unique gifts. The original Cabela’s outdoor store is only a little over an hour away. Ogallala dining choices include western grills and steakhouses, Chinese, cafes, family-style restaurants and an assortment of fast food establishments.
