70781 TREASURES OF THE BEE GEES by Brian Southall

This beautifully produced boxed book tells The Bee Gees' story along with numerous archive photos and five facsimile document wallets containing mementoes. Growing up in Manchester, on Saturdays Barry Gibb and his twin brothers went down to the Gaumont where kids could mime to records. One day the Gibb brothers' record got smashed and they had to sing live. The manager gave them a shilling and asked them to come back next week. Soon they were performing Everly Brothers hits as The Rattlesnakes, but in 1958 the family emigrated to Australia. When they returned to the U.K. in 1976 they soon had a record deal with Polydor and their songs were covered by Janis Joplin, Nina Simone and Engelbert Humperdinck. "How Deep is Your Love" from Saturday Night Fever started a series of hits until the group finally disbanded with Maurice's death in 2003. 63pp.

71738 HOPE STREET: The True Story of a Family with a Spiritual Gift

by Pamela Young and Patricia Scanlan Passed down from generation to generation in this unusual family was the gift of the women to be able to communicate with the Spirit worlds. On the surface they were traditional working class people from Horwich near Manchester. Like other families, they had their share of tragedy - children who died of then incurable illnesses or were killed by horses and carts, mothers who were evicted and ended up wandering the streets, affairs, a secret elopement and a double suicide. From the age of five the author would watch her mother go into a trance, and hear from her father how once a silver ball sped around the room, and another time a carnation materialized in mid air. After her mother's death, the narrator was saved from the depths of despair when she discovered her own spiritual gift. 263 pages, photos. £12.99 NOW £5
