What’s New Water 101: The Basics and Beyond


Water 101 is coming to Southern California Oct. 2-3, 2014. This day-and-a-half course offers you the opportunity to learn the California water basics and water district board member governance. The course will be held at the Cucamonga Valley Water District’s Frontier Project in Rancho Cucamonga.


Water 101 is open to anyone interested in learning more about the history of and the management structure of water in California, and about the key water issues facing the state – including the drought, groundwater management and the potential for a 2014 water bond. Oct. 3 offers a governance primer for water district directors, and an optional tour of the water plant. Top speakers include:


• Lester Snow, former California natural resources secretary, discussing the declining ecosystem in this drought year and the crisis of groundwater management


• Alf Brandt, principal consultant, California State Assembly, discussing working with and understanding the state Legislature


• Eric Garner, attorney at Best Best & Krieger, providing an overview of California’s water rights system


The course will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 2 and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 3. Registration for both days is $275. The fee includes all educational materials, coffee breaks, lunch on Oct. 3 and a graduation certifi cate. Santa Ana River Watershed Conference


Set for Oct. 14 at the Riverside Convention Center in Riverside, the annual Santa Ana River Watershed Conference: Keeping Our Cool will highlight the regional work accomplished by the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority and explore ways the Authority can continue its efforts to work proactively for sustainable solutions. The one-day event is convened by the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority and coordinated by the Foundation.

Tour the Russian River Region Oct. 9-10


This 2-day, 1-night tour travels the Russian River watershed, a microcosm of water management issues in the West: fl ood management, groundwater overdraft and recharge, salmon restoration and water quality problems.


Stops include Lake Sonoma Overlook, fi sheries tours, Dry Creek, an infl atable dam, sustainable energy features of Sonoma Valley Sanitation District, recycled water use, Napa Sonoma salt marshland, and local Sonoma County wineries along the route. The tour begins and ends in Santa Rosa.


Registration for this two-day, one-night tour is $495 per person, single occupancy room, or $425 each for two people sharing a room. Receive continuing education credits for an additional $100 fee.
