Growth in Manufacturing Continues Gaining Strength

conomic activity in the US manufacturing sector expanded in October for the fifth consecutive month, while the over- all economy grew for the 53rd consecutive month, according to the Manufacturing ISM Report on Business. The PMI registered 56.4%, an increase of 0.2 percent- age points from September’s reading of 56.2%. Read- ings below 50 indicate contraction, while those above 50 indicate expansion.


The PMI has increased progressively each month since June, with October’s reading reflecting the highest PMI in 2013. In all, nine of the 10 indices tracked as part of the Manu- facturing ISM Report on Business showed growth in October. That included: New Orders (60.6%), Production (60.8%), Employment (53.2%), Supplier Deliveries (54.7%), Prices (55.5%), Backlog of Orders (51.5%), Exports (57%), and
