24 IMG Studios
The new IMG Studios facilities are a pioneering example of how state-of-the-art broadcast audio can be intelligently integrated into a sports production broadcast facility.
IMG Studios, a division of IMG Worldwide, the global sports, fashion and media company, are relocating to a new state-of-the-art 107,000 square foot facility in Stockley Park, UK, which boasts 13 production galleries, 4 sound dubbing suites, 72 edit suites, 5 radio stations, 5 transmission suites and a master control room. The stunning new facilities are purpose built to cater to its portfolio of broadcast production services, which include work for the Barclays Premier League, the Football League and UEFA Champions League, in addition to clients in the fashion and media industries.
Broadcast System Integrator TSL was hired to carry out the technical fit out of the studios by IMG. Almost 50 per cent of the equipment installed by TSL was newly purchased, which includes Avid S5 Fusion consoles in three 5.1 surround sound post production suites and numerous Genelec loudspeakers throughout the building, which were supplied by HHB.
IMG Media’s Head of Post Production and Encoding Richard Chipperfield explains that the move to IMG Studios has allowed the company to re-evaluate how they work. In doing so they chose the Avid S5 Fusion consoles for the deep Pro Tools control and flexibility offered by the system. He explains: “Although we are using the S5 consoles solely for post production, it is a hybrid system that can provide backup for overflow from our dedicated live broadcast and radio rooms, if needed. We definitely wanted to have that option available.”
Having worked on totally tapeless productions for over three years, Chipperfield has found the Avid system best suited for this workflow: “We looked at other systems and there was always an element of transcoding needed that would slow down the process. If we are working on a Football review show that has to go out on Sunday evening we can’t afford the transcoding times involved with other systems. The guys at Scrub have been fantastic because they have helped us on this journey. Once you get into a particular groove of a tapeless workflow it works very well because it gives you the capacity to bounce content around more freely, and we are being very creative in how we manage that. Audio engineers can now log in and see audio on the network that can be used on any of the Avid systems. This way of working is a luxury and it is exactly where we want to be right now.”
