Some of the contents of Anolis’ box set—not just the movies, but a valentine to the series and its actors.

next morning, to corral Harris and a camcorder- toting fan into filming a “trailer” for his quixotic production in the street outside Dusseldorf’s Am- bient Hotel. So, in addition to everything else, the documentary captures some inadvertent glimpses of “Frank Kramer” actually directing! As if the final disc itself were not enough of a bow around this exhaustive package, the set is further decked-out with a plethora of Easter eggs: On Drei gelbe katzen, if you let the main menu play, you can hear the original Gino Marinuzzi, Jr. soundtrack in its entirety. On In den klauen des goldener drachen,

there is an extra 9m clip of Brad Harris comment- ing on some of his best stunts in the series. To access it, go to the Extras Menu, chose the Parolini- Filmographie, but do not hit Enter. Instead, press the left arrow button, then Enter. On Drei blaue panther, a camera crew fol- lows Brad Harris to FIBO in Essen, one of the biggest trade shows for fitness and body-building. Go to the Extras menu, select Filmprogramme but do not hit Enter. Instead, as before, press the left arrow button, and then Enter. Drei goldene schlangen is loaded with Eas- ter eggs. For the first, go to the Extras menu, choose Exit but do not hit Enter; instead, select the up arrow button and then Enter. This will lead you to a little clip reminiscent of a certain Alfred Hitchcock movie.

For the next: go to the Extras menu, choose Cred- its, then select the Up Arrow button and then Enter.

This will lead you to a charming little film about Mother Steinbeck, Brad Harris’ biggest fan, and her trip to Braunschweig, where she was able to meet him at a Westerns convention where he was Guest of Honor. This featurette includes a scene of Brad and Mother Steinbeck dancing to country music. The last can be accessed by going to the Extras menu, selecting Credits, and then once inside, pressing the Up Arrow button twice, then Enter. This will play another featurette chronicling Brad Harris’ trip to the Oktoberfest in Munich in 2012. He reportedly hasn’t missed one in 54 years. Also in attendance are fellow Kommissar X fix- tures Siegfried Rauch and Christa Linder (neither of whom can be seen in any of the more visible extras) and also Christiane Rücker (Babette from Harald Reinl’s Die schlangengrube und das pendel/THE TORTURE CHAMBER OF DR. SADISM, 1967).

In American dollars, the cost of this set works out to something like $225, which is a lot to ask for a standard DVD set of only six films. (In con- trast, Universal’s ALFRED HITCHCOCK: THE MASTERPIECE COLLECTION offers 15 Blu-ray discs at a retail cost of $299 but can be found for $145 online.) It was knowingly produced by a small company for an ardent niche audience, but it rewards that audience lavishly. Go for the individual release of Kommissar X: Drei gelbe katzen if you just want to get your feet wet, and invest in the box if you want to experience an infectious love of cinema.
