Material offers superior bone apposition
Invibio Biomaterial Solutions has introduced a material that offers the same advantages of PEEK-OPTIMA with the addition of enhanced bone apposition. In this grade, hydroxyapatite (HA), a
well-known osteoconductive is fully integrated into the PEEK-OPTIMA natural grade to provide a complete homogeneous compound that ensures that HA will be present at all surfaces of a device. The company developed the product after surgeon feedback indicated that a version of PEEK that enhances bone ongrowth on all sides of the device could be more effective. In a pre-clinical in vivo study using a sheep model, within four weeks of implantation the material demonstrated enhanced bone apposition compared with PEEK-OPTIMA natural, reports the company. Within 12 weeks of implantation the bone apposition levels are maintained with the new grade. PEEK-OPTIMA HA Enhanced Polymer provides good mechanical properties and performance, proven biocompatibility, a modulus similar to cortical bone to reduce stress shielding and a high degree of radiolucency that allows for clear fusion assessment. It offers the same processing simplicity as PEEK-OPTIMA and omits the extra processing time and expense of alternative bone on-growth technologies such as coatings. Invibio Ltd

Designer and manufacturer of sensors for use in a variety of medical equipment, Morgan Advanced Materials has invested in state-of the- art testing equipment to enhance its capability for in-house sensor prototyping and testing. The rig is designed to test pressures as low as 0.3 bar absolute. It incorporates a function generator, oscilloscope, impedance analyser, digital pressure sensor and Coriolis flow meter with a resolution of <0.02 to >3000 mL/min, an accuracy of ± 0.2%, and repeatability of ± 0.05%.
Morgan Advanced Ceramics manufactures a variety of air in line sensors, occlusion and flow sensors. The air in line sensors are employed in drug therapy, dialysis, infusions and enteral feeding. Designs and configurations can be adapted to suit individual device requirements in terms of tube diameters, clamping methods, mounting arrangements and interfaces with disposable cassettes. Occlusion sensors offer non-invasive detection of pressure changes (upstream and downstream of the pump mechanism) in the flexible tubes used in equipment such as infusion pumps, enteral feeding pumps, dialysis equipment and other fluid applications.
