MODA REVIEW

at the NEC Birmingham, and saw brands and buyers in a positive mood with many hailing the season as a turning point for the retail industry.

T With brands reporting a year-on-year increase

in sales figures at the show, for many it has been the best season since the start of the recession. David Rudd, sales manager for Mustang Shoes commented: “We have seen a lot of repeat business as well as new accounts with the show proving very strong for independent retail and big mail order house businesses. It has really perked me up looking at the figures throughout the show and seeing the big increases. Retailers are ready to buy fresh new stock again which is such good news.”

This sentiment was echoed by retailers across

the sector as Donald Begg, owner of Begg Shoes & Bags in Scotland said: “It was undoubtedly a worthwhile trip for our business. We haven’t been down to Moda for a long time but a need for us to open our eyes to new brands meant that it was a must-see this year. From our perspective the show did not disappoint. We were able to evaluate the spring/summer 14 fashions in clothing, which undoubtedly impact on what our customers will buy in footwear, and we picked up at least five new suppliers at the show which we hope will boost footfall in our shops and on our website.”

Concurrent with the recent increase in spending across the footwear industry, several brands identified the effect of the summer as a key factor in this change of mood.

he spring/summer edition of Moda Footwear, the UK’s largest footwear exhibition, took place between 11-13 August

Deck shoe specialists, Chatham Marine

reported a 70% increase in their sales compared to this time last year. Phillip Marsh, the brand’s managing director said: “We have seen some serious buyers this season and we have really hit our target market.

The weather has undoubtedly been a factor in

the increase in sales as our product in particular appeals to the summer’s nautical styles and for the first time in recent years it feels like buyers are ready and willing to bring in new stock and really capitalise on these trends.”

Across the show a range of new launches and

exclusive collections have found particular success this season with newcomer Joules receiving a warm reception as John Oakes, the brand’s multi-channel marketing manager explained: “We have had a fantastic reaction to our footwear at the show. On Sunday alone we opened 10 new accounts, with seven of those being childrenswear retailers as well as dealing with existing customers, so it’s been a great choice for us to not only return to Moda but to make our debut in Moda Footwear.”

Kelly White, UK Agent for Méduse, another new

label exhibiting at this season’s show said: “ As a new brand in the UK our main objective was exposure and the show exceeded our expectations. There was a lot of interest in our collection with

some very good orders received and most importantly we have now made contact with a number of excellent accounts so we are very encouraged and excited about the future of the brand in the UK. ”
