Russian market sees small overall rise R
ussian carriers achieved small gains of up to 3.8 per cent in internatonal cargo tonnage, comparing January to July 2013 with the first seven months of 2012, while July itself saw a 8.6 per
cent increase compared with the same period 12 months earlier. The figures, released by Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency,
show that the largest
increase was in domestic cargo. Comparing January to July 2012 and 2013, there was a rise of 20.4 per cent. Tonnage jumped from 10,055 tonnes to more than 12,000. While carriers moved 395,791 tonnes internationally in the first seven months of the year, domestic trans- portation shifted 12,104 tonnes. The only negative figure for the Russian mar-
ket was domestic cargo in July, with a 2.5 per cent dip compared with the same month in 2012. Many Russian carriers saw tonnage fall in both the domestic and international markets,
but there were a number of airlines that had substantial improvements in both. Comparing the first seven months of 2012 and 2013, Ang- ara more then doubled its tonnage with a rise of 135 per cent; Polar Airlines had an increase of over 100 per cent; Atran achieved more than 70 per cent; Donavia around 50 per cent; Balloon Company also 50 per cent; Muscovy saw growth of 45 per cent; while AirBridgeCargo, Orenburg Airlines and Yamal Aviation Transport Com- pany, saw increases of 16 to 23 per cent. The losers in the Russian cargo market were
Aviacon Zitotrans, which transported in 2013 just 39.6 per cent of the tonnage it moved in 2012; Yakutia and Flight could only move in 2013 about 67 per cent of the cargo they
moved in 2012;and many others saw 10, 15 or 20 per cent falls in their tonnage, including Vol- ga-Dnepr, Aviastar, Alrosa, Vladivostok Avia and Krasavia. Aeroflot managed to achieve January to July 2013 tonnage levels that were only two per cent below its airfreight levels, but it has now stopped using its pure freighter Boeing MD-11s. Between Russia and its former Soviet states in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) airfreight tonnage was static with no change, while Russian cargo to non-CIS coun- tries rose three per cent. The July domestic figures were healthier with a rise of almost nine per cent compared to 2012 - freight increased from 77,682 tonnes to 84,350.
