MALTA W

Med favourite

Malta is an enduring favourite with UK travellers – and now’s the time for agents to reacquaint themselves with the destination, says Jeannine Williamson

ith a British infl uence that dates back to its days as a colony, the Mediterranean

island of Malta has long been a popular destination for the home market – and there’s plenty to see beyond the familiar red phone and post boxes and well-known high street stores. Less than three hours’ fl ying time from the UK, the Maltese archipelago consists of Malta and its smaller sister islands Gozo and Comino. Steeped in history and culture, and with year-round sunshine, Malta also offers soft adventure, watersports, spas, excellent food and a good choice of accommodation.

Gary Boyer, Head of Purchasing

for Classic Collection Holidays, said: “Malta is a perennial favourite with UK visitors and once again our summer and winter fi gures are both just short of 20% up year on year. More recent additions to our programme, such as the fi ve-star boutique Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux hotel, have added to the island’s appeal and contributed to an increase in shorter, city break-type stays of three to four nights, whilst the larger resort hotels continue to welcome those on a more traditional longer stay of seven or 14 nights.” ‘Twin-centre’ holidays can easily be

combined with Gozo, just 25 minutes away by ferry, which is greener

and quieter than the main island. Comino, situated between the two, is smaller still and famous for its Blue Lagoon, a natural inlet with clear, azure waters. Nicola Frame, from family holiday

specialist The Adventure Company said: “Malta is a small island that is easy to get around. With almost guaranteed sunshine and a short fl ight time it is a great option for families with younger children who want to explore their destination rather than stay by the hotel pool.” When it’s time to get active Malta has some of the best diving in the Mediterranean with warm waters and exceptional visibility. “It offers a spectacular variety of

dive sites for clients who want to learn to dive as well as experienced divers seeking out wrecks and caves,” added Teresa Bennett, Managing Director of Dive Worldwide. Annual events include the

colourful February carnival week, which dates back to the 16th century

“The best way to truly discover Malta is by doing so on foot. The island is a perfect all year round destination, due to the excellent climate, and the ideal seasons for walking are

spring and autumn” TONY MANISCALCO MARKETING MANAGER
