that would have created an indepen- dent inspector general to oversee the New York City Police Department. Passed June 27 by the New York City Council, the bill responded to contro- versial NYPD policies after reports of officers targeting mosques, Mus- lim businesses, organizations and students for surveillance.
House acts on chaplains House lawmakers in July approved an amendment to a Pentagon spend- ing bill to prevent the appointment of nonreligious military chaplains. It requires that only religious organiza- tions be permitted to endorse military chaplains. Currently the Department of Defense recognizes more than 200 endorsing agents, all of them based on a belief in God. But there has been a recent push by Humanists, who don’t recognize a supernatural divinity, to endorse their military chaplains.
Pilgrims mourn
After the July 24 train crash outside Santiago de Compostela, Spain, the Green Pilgrimage Network expressed sympathy for victims and their families. Santiago de Compos- tela, a religious pilgrimage site, is one of 18 cities that belong to this global network of pilgrim cities and sacred sites with an interest in green action and care.
Royal assent England and Wales became the 16th and 17th countries to recognize gay marriage July 17 when Queen Eliza- beth II gave “royal assent” to a same- sex marriage bill. The law allows same-sex couples to be joined in either civil ceremonies or church ser- vices, although it doesn’t require any religious denomination to perform the marriage. Separate legislation
has been presented to the Scottish government to make same-sex mar- riage legal, and debates are expected to begin in Edinburgh in October.
