with Damian McGillicuddy
Here’s our agony aunt with a difference: every month, Damian will answer your photography questions
“Hi Damian, I’ve been shooting portraiture using friends and family as models, but am looking to use proper models too. How should I go about this? Are there websites dedicated to portfolios, and will models work for prints, or should I be looking at offering a fee?” Stephen Cork
Hi Stephen, there are lots of portfolio sites out there which can be a great way to connect with photographic subjects. Try taking a look at sites such as
modelmayhem.com and
purestorm.com. When it comes to time for prints, my advice quite simply is to pay your subject for their time, then there’s no pressure to produce images to give to them. You can then make sure the pictures are as you wish them to be with your own style. I know it can seem like a great idea to swap images for time, but all too often, you may be put under pressure to deliver too many too quickly. If you go down the route of using a subject from a model site, paying for time can make things far less complicated and give you a more professional experience. Happy shooting!
