10 The data deluge
Technological advances mean that zettabyes of data are being generated, providing an incredible opportunity for discovery – but only if we have the means to process and explore that data. Tis is a challenge that spans industries and scientific fields. Within laboratories, for example, integration is the issue as multiple systems churn out data in proprietary and oſten inconsistent formats. Tis topic is explored on page 10. Meanwhile, our feature on data-
intensive computing (p34) takes a closer look at how Hadoop, an open- source soſtware project for distributed computing, can enable companies to take full advantage of their data silos. Staying with the topic of HPC, I would
like to draw your attention to our ISC’13 show preview (p24). Tis year’s event will take place in its new home of Leipzig, and if you’re making the journey, please stop by booth #501 and meet the team. Rounding out this issue are features on
a broad range of topics from HPC cooling (p38) and statistics for non-statisticians (p17), to the simulation and optimisation of solar energy (p44).
