viability of many of the proposed gas pipelines from East to Western Europe is uncertain. If built, some could be destined to become white elephants – potentially in the wrong place and maybe even pointing in the wrong direction. With money for these mega projects scarce and expensive, it is possible that Europe may turn its attention over the coming years to the construction of shorter pipelines that fi ll the gaps in the existing network.
