SHOT

with Damian McGillicuddy

Here’s our new agony aunt with a difference: every month, Damian will answer your photography questions

“I shoot a lot of portraits when I’m out and about: do you have any tips for quickly seeing how light will appear on skin?”

As I always say - it’s keeping it simple that matters the most. I’m a self-confessed lazy photographer and if something’s easy to do, then I’m far more likely to do it – so when it comes to kit, I keep it to a minimum (using the OM-D helps here because I can pack everything I need into a single bag rather than lugging mountains of kit with me). So I don’t like carrying anything I don’t really need. To see how light’s behaving in a certain location – are you ready for this? – I use my fists. But as I’m a lover, not a fighter, I’m not using my mitts in anger – I’m just holding my hand up and twisting it this way and that, paying attention to how the light’s falling on my knuckles. It’s so simple, yet it gives you a good estimate of how you need your subject or model to move their face to make the most of the ambient light available. Look at that, a totally free bit of equipment that (theoretically) you already own two of!
