Philip Hougen, former bishop of the Southeastern Iowa Synod, is serving as interim bishop. Burnside’s term concludes the end of June. The synod assem- bly was expected to decide May 4 on the recommendation of its council to delay the election of a bishop until the fall.


Former NCC leader dies Bob Edgar, 69, a past National Coun- cil of Churches of Christ general secretary known for religious bridge- building, died of a heart attack April 23 while at home in Burke, Va. Edgar, a United Methodist minister, led the NCC through a series of restructur- ing cuts. At the time of his death, he was head of Common Cause, a non- partisan government accountability organization. Edgar was elected to Congress from southeastern Penn- sylvania in 1974.
