SOUTHERN CROSSED
UK and US novelists dominate Down Under and in South Africa. Yet, Tom Tivnan finds, there are some homegrown hits in non-fiction
BESIDES E L JAMES and a still strong erotica/romance trend, there is another thing—sadly—that unites today’s three southern hemisphere Anglophone markets: no homegrown authors at the top of the fiction charts. You have to go down to 14th place
in South Africa to find the first Saffa entry: actor/author John van de Ruit’s Spud: Exit—Pursued by a Bear (Penguin), the fourth of his comic novels featuring the titular schoolboy hero. Bryce Courtney flies the Southern
Cross in the Australian fiction charts; his Jack of Diamonds (Viking) is in 17th place (Courtney was born in South Africa, but is an Australian citizen). Tere are no Kiwis in the New Zealand top 20, though given the film connections, J R R Tolkien could be viewed as something of an honorary citizen. SFF is rather strong in all three
territories. In addition to the Tolkien boost fuelled by the first of Peter Jackson’s “Te Hobbit” films, A Memory of Light—the 14th and final book in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series—is number one in Australia, seventh in NZ and 20th in South Africa. Jordan died in 2007, and the final three books in the series have been finished by Brandon Sanderson, based on Jordan’s notes. As might be expected, in non-
fiction the home fires burn brighter. Getting one’s driver’s licence certainly seems important in both NZ and SA, with driver’s manuals topping both charts. Other native hits in the three territories include Kiwi celeb chef Annabel Langbein’s Te Free Range Cook; political activist Mamphela Ramphele’s call to arms for South African youth, Conversations with My Sons and Daughters; and I Quit Sugar, the “new year, new you” diet and wellness book based on the health food blog by Sarah Wilson, the former host of “MasterChef Australia”.
