RICK TAYLOR Captain 2013

A MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAINS

ON BEHALF OF ALL OUR MEMBERS it is a very great pleasure to welcome you to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, and to this new edition of the Club’s annual magazine. Rarely a year goes by without the Club being able to mark an important anniversary in the history of the game of golf. On June 24 1913, here at Hoylake, J. H. Taylor won his fifth Open championship. Our wonderful cover photograph shows him with the famous trophy, and alongside him are Harry Vardon, Arnaud Massy and Ted Ray. We know you will enjoy past Captain Joe Pinnington’s account of a memorable victory that brings to life this image from a century ago. The story is another reminder, if one were needed, that Members and visitors to Hoylake truly follow in the footsteps of giants when they play our historic links. Royal Liverpool is proud of its history and

true to its traditions even as it strives year on year to be a championship golf course and venue able to meet the demands of the 21st century game. We urge visitors to take time to study the Club’s excellent collection of golf memorabilia, just a fraction of which is on display in these pages where former Secretary Chris Moore examines the evolution of the Club’s crest and medals during the late 19th century, and Chairman of Heritage Nigel Packer continues to tell our history of Hoylake in 100 objects. Just a year from now Royal Liverpool will host for the 12th time the Open Championship.

The resurgence of Hoylake as a great links and world class venue is good news for golf, for the town of Hoylake, Wirral and the Liverpool City Region, and, of course, for the Club. As ever, many thanks must go to the Hoylake community, to our Links Manager, Craig Gilholm, and his skilled and hard working team, and to the Members of Council and committees that inform so many important decisions about the future of the Club. This year Royal Liverpool is pleased

to extend a warm welcome to the young competitors who will play in the Boys Championship on the links of Hoylake and Wallasey Golf Club. The amateur game is always at the heart of Hoylake’s past, present and future, and it will be exciting to watch the stars of tomorrow get to grips with a stern but true test of golf. It goes without saying that this annual

magazine would not exist but for the generous support of our advertisers. To all of you we offer our sincere thanks. The Company Golf Day is one of the highlights of the Club’s calendar, and we will be delighted to act as hosts on the occasion. Our thanks also go to everyone who has

contributed articles and photographs to the magazine. Each annual edition swiftly becomes a collectable item of golf memorabilia and your hard work and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated. To Members and visitors alike, may we wish you happy golfing this year and beyond. ■
