Triple Threat: Weber rolled past Belmonte (bottom right) to win the TOC and complete his second PBA Triple Crown.

PDW Secures Second Triple Crown

Pete Weber continued his assault on the PBA record books, notching his 10th major and completing PBA’s Triple Crown for the second time when he rolled past Australian Jason Belmonte, 224-179, to win the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champi- ons in Indianapolis.

In a stepladder fi nal that featured

enough revs to get a jumbo jet airborne, the top-seeded Weber enjoyed the luxury of watching two-handers Belmonte and

Osku Palermaa, and hard-throwing Tommy Jones and Sean Rash carve up the TV lanes. Not a single bowler played the approach in front of the designated lane, opting instead to loft their ball over the end cap and sever- al feet up the lane.

In the end, however, none of the fi nalists managed to win back-to-back matches. In the opening match, Jones toppled Paler- maa, 226-183, then fell to Rash, 247-233. In a much-anticipated matchup pitting the game’s fi ercest rivals, Belmonte rode an opening fi ve-bagger to a 229-171 win over Rash, setting up the title match.

The title match proved not much of a match at all, as Belmonte left the 4-10 split a mind-numbing three times, converting only once. Weber, meanwhile, seemingly fl oating his ball through the burned up lanes, tossed four doubles en route to the easy win.

“It didn’t look like Belmo was comfort- able with the lanes,” said Weber. “I was comfortable. I felt my ball would get down the lane, no matter what.”

The win moved Weber into a tie with Earl Anthony for most PBA majors (10), and with Norm Duke for third on the PBA’s all- time titles list with 37, trailing only Anthony (43) and Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47).
