THIS WEEK saw the launch of Zero waste events: a 2020 vision, a new event industry roadmap initiative with the goal of no waste being sent to landfill from UK events by the end of the decade. The Events Industry

Roadmap has been developed by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) working with the events industry as part of its work on the European Pathway to Zero Waste project (EPOW). According to WRAP, the

roadmap is "the first stage in raising awareness of the positive impact which effective management of waste has on the delivery of events, both economically and environmentally". Specifically the roadmap: • Sets out a vision for how the industry can achieve zero waste to landfill from the events sector by 2020

• Challenges the industry to consider how it can work more in partnership across the whole supply chain, working individually and collaboratively, to reduce waste

• Highlights the steps that need to be considered when preparing for and delivering a zero waste event - whatever the size, nature or location; be it commercial, cultural or sporting. Dr Liz Goodwin, CEO,

WRAP, said: “The London 2012 Olympics showed just what could be achieved by a clear commitment, by trying to prevent waste and manage it sustainably. "Making waste prevention

part of an event’s plan can deliver significant savings for businesses large and small. It will benefit all; from local community activities right up to large-scale UK events like the Ryder Cup and the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow.” Lord de Mauley, resource

management minister, added: “The UK has a rich and diverse heritage of music festivals, sporting events and cultural activities running throughout the year. These bring considerable economic benefits to our towns and cities through domestic spending and by attracting tourists to our shores. “An industry worth

£36bn can make significant

savings by tackling waste and reducing the impact waste overheads have on the bottom line. The industry can use this roadmap to improve their business returns through simple, collective effort.” The roadmap is said to be

relevant to all those involved in planning and delivering events. This includes event organisers/managers and contractors, venue owners, corporate sponsors, local authorities, waste contractors and catering companies to construction firms. The events roadmap is

supported by a dedicated events industry portal www. zerowasteevents.org.uk. The website is home to resources produced by WRAP, its partners, and third parties. It signposts users to other

information to help events become more sustainable. A WRAP spokesperson

said it will form a central repository for materials and information relating to achieving zero waste events. These include WRAP’s

event resource management plan tool; an online tool for event organisers and suppliers to manage event waste, as well as the London 2012 Learning Legacy documents.

THE BRITISHMetals Recycling Association (BMRA) has welcomed news that the Scrap Metal Dealers Act has received royal assent. The Act is designed to regulate the scrap metal dealer’s industry and prevent metal theft. BMRA director general Ian

Hetherington said: “The Scrap Metal Dealers’ Act receiving royal assent is a milestone in bringing licensing up to date and in tackling metal theft. “The implementation

of the new Act in October will eradicate some of the issues brought about by the introduction of the LASPO Act late last year and will help to close down traders who operate on the wrong side of the law. “We now have six months

in which to work with local authorities, the Environment Agency, the police and members to make sure that everyone has the tools in place to enforce the new rules as quickly as possible.” Nicola Guest from

Hertfordshire-based Alchemy Metals told RWW: "Even with cross party support the new Bill did not have the smoothest of journeys and there were many occasions

Labour announces waste policy review

GAVIN SHUKERMP, shadow minister for water and waste, announced at the 9th International Energy from Conference (see pages 8-9 for conference review) that Labour is going to launch its own waste policy review in the coming months. “My colleague, Hilary Benn, is working hard to develop a

coherent strategy to handle our waste. The planning system should require a clear framework and responsibility should be shared along with the benefits,” said Shuker. “Our own policy review will drive performance. The present

UK targets are merely about scraping the bar while other countries send no waste to landfill. Aligning our recycling targets with other parts of the UK would also bring us nearer to achieving our targets while the potential of the waste industry to create jobs is huge,” continued the shadow minister.

when the Bill falling by the wayside was a real possibility; the fact that it is now on the statute book with an anticipated October commencement date is a major success. "The new bill succeeds in

bringing the metal recycling industry into the 21st century and will allow law abiding companies to thrive on a level playing field. "The next six months

are absolutely crucial. It is imperative that the police handle those companies and individuals still operating outside of the law (for example by continuing to pay cash) robustly, any stepping back by the authorities at this stage would potentially mean an increase in metal theft attempts," added Guest.
