Chopping, shredding materials on the move


Whether it entails solid recovered fuel, hard disc drives or plastic shredding, the ever adaptable shredders sector has something for every requirement and, if not, they are open to suggestions. RWW takes a look at some of the products on offer.

NFORMATION MANAGEMENT and its security is a topic high on companies’ priorities and a business who takes its customers’ interests to heart is information management specialist, IronMountain. They


recently ordered shredders from Northern Ireland-based specialist, Ulster Shredders. The latest installation close to Ulster


Shredders’ new manufacturing facility is said to have brought full circle a programme of re-equipping IronMountain’s shredding facilities which has taken place over the past three years. The shredding equipment supplied


comprises a range of models manufactured by Ulster Shredders and includes their U-15 supplied to the Prague depot, U-45SB models supplied for media destruction in Warrington and Livingston as well as Antrim. Livingston, Swindon and Summerhill (Ireland). Ulster Shredders also delivered U-100


models in various configurations for primary and secondary document shredding to a high level of security including the flagship installation at IronMountain’s London City’s Canningtown depot where four U-150 models, each powered by 2 x 55kW drive, motor units are being deployed. According to ElliottMartin,MD of Ulster


Shredders: “Our technical staff worked closely with IronMountain in order to achieve the best solution for equipment in each location based on volume and shred requirements and have tailored each system to meet the most stringent levels of performance and reliability.” Ulster Shredders manufacture a range of


shredding machines from 10hp (7.5kW up to 250hp (180kW) for an array of applications including clinical waste processing, plastics, packaging, WEEE and many more.


The Piranha The Evashred EV25E Piranha HDD shredder (pictured below) is a new product from FV Evans & Sons in Wellington New Zealand and distributed in the UK by Ecosystem.With IT security high on everyone’s agenda, the


Piranha was designed for use for on and off site security shredding of hard disc drives. The machine comes in two versions to run


on an ordinary 240v power point or a 415v 3-phase power supply. There is an optional out feed conveyor or the material can be dropped into a container under the machine. According to Ian Watson at Ecosystem:


“The machine is on castors so it can be easily moved from one location to another. Without the out feed conveyor the machine can fit through a normal door. It weighs 350kg, so it is relatively portable and can be used in a van. “The cutters are made from the best


quality tool steel we can source for long lasting professional use and the machine is very quiet in operation,” adds Watson. The 3-phase version can shred heavier


server drives complete with their caddies. Watson again: “Currently the shredded


hard drives have a high resale scrap value in the UK. The machine is fitted with a variable speed drive, so the performance can be adjusted by the user to suit the product being shredded.” The shredder will also shred phones,


laptops, tapes and cassettes. The 3-phase version will shred 15 HDD


drives in 60 seconds whereas the 240v is less powerful. Ecosystem also supplies the Evashred


EV65E which is a new machine for the UK. It will shred most solid waste types, tyres, paper, steel, plastic, fabric, plastic, wood etc. It is driven by two motors and gearboxes


to minimise current draw at start-up and to deliver maximum torque to the blades. The machine can be delivered in a


number of different shred sizes and layouts according to the specific application. The EV65E can be supplied with optional


in and out feed conveyors belts and a force feed hopper.


Yorwaste opts for UNTHA Yorkshire-based waste and recycling company, Yorwaste celebrated its 20th anniversary last month. According to a company spokesperson: “It is widely acknowledged that the UK must do more to reduce its landfill contributions and instead harness energy from waste.” Therefore, keen to introduce a new system


to support this step-change, Yorwaste opened a new solid recovered fuel (SRF) facility at the end of 2012. A commercial and industrial


(C&I) recycling operation already existed at Yorwaste’s York site, but some residual waste was being landfilled. However by investing further in the latest technology, Yorwaste says it now has “a high quality SRF production system that enhances the country’s landfill diversion commitments, increases cost efficiencies for Yorwaste by avoiding ever-rising landfill charges and delivers economic and environmental benefits for customers seeking a zero landfill


waste management partner”. 6 March 7 2013


Ulster Shredders manufacture machines from 10hp (7.5kW up to 250hp (180kW) for various applications Yorwaste’s new plant comprises a variety


of sorting equipment, picking stations, trammels, screens, and eddy current separator, air density equipment and a single shaft secondary shredder. The UNTHA TR3200 shredder, with a


1,100mm rotor and 175 rpm rotor speed, is reported to have enabled Yorwaste to achieve its desired output of 10 tonnes per hour, although the TR is reported to be capable of producing higher tonnages. According to UNTHA UK, this shredder


has been specifically developed for post shredding to a consistently-sized fraction (<30mm) with a high calorific value and very low fines content. An UNTHA UK spokesperson says: “With


its high uptime, impressive throughput and low operating costs, Yorwaste deemed the TR the most profitable post-shredding equipment available.” Yorwaste is set to produce 25,000 tonnes


of SRF in 2013.


Protecting plastic shredding When it comes to plastic shredding and ensuring that a shredder’s input stream doesn’t contain metallic contaminants which have the potential to damage downstream equipment, Hampshire-based S+S Inspection has developed the Plasticon metal detection system. Designed specifically for the plastics


industry with the aim of detecting and removing metal fragments before cutting mills, chippers and shredders can be damaged, the Plasticon is reported to be equally suitable for demanding applications in other industries where a combination of robust construction and sensitive metal detection is needed. The conveyor system is built on a heavy-


duty, welded steel frame and may be fitted with a choice of tunnel or plate metal detector heads to match the material size and scanning sensitivity demanded by the

application. According to S+S, the conveyor belt uses the latest materials developed to ensure that the scanning sensitivity is not compromised and lateral guides (fitted with brush seals) prevent even the smallest pieces from getting under the belt. When metal contamination is detected, the


belt can be stopped or reversed automatically and a visual or audible warning may be specified as an option. S+S Inspection also produces the ELCON


single face metal detector. According to a company spokesperson,


it is simple to install in existing and new conveyor belt and chute systems for the detection of magnetic and non-magnetic contamination up to 100mm high in both low volume and bulk applications. Installed under the belt or chute, the


detector is said to require no additional metal free zone and may be used as a belt bed plate. Equipped with the PRIMUS control unit,


the detector is available with a range of audible and visual detection signals and may be combined with a conveyor stop or a reject mechanism signal for automatic operation. The control unit uses 2-channel phase


technology combined with digital processing and automatic self-calibration to increase performance reliability and consistency of metal detection while simplifying operation and increasing productivity. The auto-learn capability is said to


be especially effective when inspecting electrically conductive materials, including metal oxides and carbon black, in the plastics manufacturing industry. The membrane keypad and 3-key


adjustment of sensitivity, product changeover and auto-learn is reported to make the PRIMUS very user-friendly. Finally, three pre-set frequently used and


eight user defined operations, stored in non- volatile memory, are selected from the front panel with password protection to eliminate unauthorised access.
