John Lewis commits to new waste plastic strategy
THE JOHN Lewis Partnership has committed to developing a ‘closed loop’ waste plastics strategy through a new contract with Liverpool-based recycler Centriforce Products – a pioneering move, according to John Lewis, that is believed to be a first for any UK retailer. The new arrangement is
expected to guarantee that thousands of tonnes of plastics waste from Waitrose and John Lewis shops are recycled into useable products by Centriforce, the UK-based independent plastics recycler. The retailer said it is also
exploring opportunities to reuse Centriforce products such as plastic
planks and sheeting in its new store construction programme to achieve a true ‘closed loop’ in its plastics waste stream. According to Centriforce, it
expects to collect more than 3,000 tonnes of plastics waste from John Lewis and Waitrose distribution centres across the UK annually and bring the waste to its Liverpool manufacturing centre. “We want to be completely
transparent in our approach to waste management and ensure that as much as possible is recycled and then reused in our own businesses,” said Mike Walters, recycling and waste operations manager for the John Lewis Partnership. “We are committed
Companies fined after waste accident
TWO LONDON companies were ordered to pay nearly £110,000 in fines and costs last month after a lorry driver reportedly sustained life-changing injuries when he fell down a processing chute at a waste recycling plant. The Old Bailey was told the
agency worker was employed by ICSL Accord Ltd as a skip lorry driver. He was tipping rubbish into a deep waste chute at Hornsey Street Waste and Recycling Centre in Islington when he fell 10m from the rear of the vehicle down the chute. The incident, on December
3, 2007, was investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which prosecuted both ICSL Accord and the centre’s operators, London Waste Ltd, for serious safety failings.
The court heard that the worker
from Islington sustained life threatening injuries. He was treated for fractures to two vertebrae and was in a spine brace for nine months, unable to work. An independent medical report
suggested the man would never be able to return to his career as a HGV driver. He is said to now walk with a limp and is limited in the range of activities he can undertake. HSE told the court that in 2006
London Waste sites, including Hornsey Street, were inspected and audited. HSE inspectors recommended
the company reassessed its tipping arrangements and avoided work at height by directing drivers to tip their loads into flat bays. According to the HSE, the incident could have been
prevented had that procedure been in place, and the company has since made improvements to ensure it is. HSE found that ICSL failed to
give some employees sufficient training in how to safely tip rubbish at the site; London Waste failed to monitor non-compliance of site safety rules, and both companies failed to cooperate and coordinate site activities. London Waste Ltd, of Advent
Way, Edmonton, was fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £34,265 in costs after being found guilty of breaching Section 3(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974. ICSL Accord Ltd, of Albany Way,
Welwyn Garden City, was fined £24,000 with £11,241 in costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the same legislation.
Islington waste fuels job scheme
ISLINGTON RESIDENTS are reported to be reaping the rewards of a new scheme which recycles and refurbishes unwanted household items while also providing training opportunities for the local community. Repairs and maintenance
specialist, Kier, in partnership with Islington Council and social enterprise, Bright Sparks, launched the Ray Walk Recycling Centre project in May last year after converting 40 disused garages into a workshop, office and recycling storage units. According to Kier,
not only does the scheme reduce waste from void clearances going to landfill, it also provides affordable furniture and electrical items to local people, as well as offering invaluable training and volunteering opportunities. The project has already seen
five volunteers go on to paid employment after gaining NVQ qualifications as well as enabling Bright Sparks to open an additional furniture shop where the refurbished items are sold to provide funding for both training and a salaried shop manager.
PalmRecycling supplies Palm Mill
PALMRECYCLING’S commercial division has announced that from January 1, 2013, it has become the sole purchaser and supplier of recovered fibre for its parent company, Palm Paper, and its paper mill in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. According to a company
spokesperson: “The announcement sees PalmRecycling control over 550,000 tonnes of fibre material per annum as well as the management of paper stocks in a move designed to ensure a reliable and
constant input of high quality recovered fibre as well as adequate stock levels at the Kings Lynn mill.” PalmRecycling reportedly
previously supplied just over 50% of Palm Paper’s raw material requirement via UK pressroom partnerships, local authority contracts, recycling bank schemes and direct paper purchasing. Rick Waterson, commercial
director, PalmRecycling, said: “This has always been a goal for us to supply the entire needs of our
parent company’s fibre demands, and we have worked tremendously hard to achieve this position. Apart from the continuity of supply it brings, it also has the added benefit of all areas controlled by one central purchasing hub here in Cheshire.” Closer commercial ties are
reported to been forged with a number of UK fibre material suppliers. PalmRecycling says it plans to develop this fibre supply chain to secure high volumes of fibre material of the highest quality.
