Bremen Adds Automatic Grinding, Marks Safety Milestone Bremen Castings Inc. (BCI),
Bremen, Ind., plans to add four ad- ditional robotic grinding arms to the two Fanuc R200A (6-axle) arms it installed in 2011. JB Brown, presi- dent, credits them with significantly increasing consistency and standard hours of operations. “Safety is our first priority, so it is essential that we protect our em- ployees first and foremost,” Brown said. “Tis new equipment not only adds a new level of safety but it also increases productivity. We are very excited to have this fully installed in our foundry.” After the project is completed,
the facility’s grinding operation will include six of the robots with four different grinders in each of its cells. Te operator loads castings onto a belt, which feeds into the robotic cell. Te robots grind the parts and place them into a container. Te primary focus of these ma-
chines is to grind heavier parts, which helps reduce operator fatigue. BCI is working on fitting all castings to the required specifications. Te family-owned foundry and
machine shop uses 92% recycled ferrous material to produce gray and ductile iron machined castings for the global market. BCI recently celebrated 495 days
without lost time. Lost time injury is defined as an occurrence that resulted in a fatality, permanent disability or lost time from work of one day or shift, or possibly more. BCI’s last lost time occurred over a year ago and required an employee
to miss one full shift of work. Since then the metalcasting facility and machine shop have been incident free. In the future, BCI would like to establish a zero incident culture, and 1 million man hours as well as two years without lost work time.
