Hens for Hire Babs Day, headteacher at Longwill School for the Deaf, describes her work with Hens for Hire.
“Longwill is a small special school for deaf children in Birmingham – landlocked and urban with many of our children living in the inner city with a high level of deprivation. For many years I have wanted to enhance our outdoor environment and particularly to give the children a real animal experience. Next problem – how nice does one have to be to a caretaker to persuade him to look after them in the holidays? Then I saw an advertisement for Hens for Hire! We’re off! “The wonderful, children’s picture-book farmer, Claire Peach, arrived at
school with all the kit and two beautiful, ready-to-lay the next day (and they did!) fully vaccinated chickens. They are called Henny and Penny, they are lively, clucky, busy, not too smelly, fascinating to watch and to fi nd out about – and the children love them. And even better, the children do not tire of caring for them and getting the big reward of two eggs every day. “We have a year group a week as hen monitors, we make graphs of
their egg count, make mini-enterprise egg-selling weeks, and write stories about their imagined adventures when they go away for their holidays. We make fi lms about their care, we have the most engaging assemblies and ‘The Golden Egg Award’ for most creative egg use, and our sign language using pupils are able to fulfi l all their language, speaking and listening requirements. But the best thing is – a bit like the grandchildren – Hens for Hire go home again to their other life in the holidays leaving me guilt-free and happy!”

Learning Escapes
With growing rolls across the school and their previous staffroom converted into a classroom area, Whitehill Primary School in Gravesend needed to create a new space for teachers. The school wanted to develop an outdoor staffroom that would be
effi cient, eco-friendly and would cause little disruption during the build. Headteacher Jane Porter explains how their new Learning Escape has
6
given the staff a chance to unwind. Our Learning Escape is a modern twist among the traditional buildings of our school. The staff say that inside the new room, it is easy to forget you are in the
middle of a busy school. It is a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle and a place to escape. The outdoor room is also used by the school council for meetings. The children on the board feel very important with their exclusive access and this pride is refl ected in the decisions they make for the future of our school.” The outdoor staffroom has been developed with a number of eco-
friendly features, like sun pipes to ensure the space is relaxing and inspiring. The fl exible building is designed to accommodate the growing staff comfortably.
