USCF National Events / 2012 U.S. Open

The Armageddon game to determine the trophy winner attracted a crowd. Left is John Daniel Bryant facing off against Manuel Leon Hoyos.

and Norm May, Washington, also worked the main room. Joseph Yun, Ohio, helped Smith and served as chief TD of the U.S. Women’s Open, the U.S. Open Blitz, the quads, and the Game/15 championship. Haskel had a very full-time job broadcast- ing the games over the MonRoi network. Kim Cramer, Arizona, was in charge of registration. Rusty Miller, Washington, and Frank Niro, Idaho, took results at the scholastic side events, while Jay Simon- son, Utah, worked as a floor TD for two days, Galen Pyle, Oregon, worked as a floor TD at the Blitz Championship. The event was a triumph for both local organizers and USCF, which takes respon- sibility as chief organizer under the direction of the USCF’s chief operations officer, Pat Smith. “I remember that National Open Organizer Fred Gruenberg emphasized two simple rules.” Snead said. “He said it many times: ‘Start the rounds on time, and quiet in the playing room.’ ” Those key accomplish- ments and lots more, plus a strong turnout of both locals and travelers, made Vancou- ver 2012 a model for future Opens.
