Tom Tivnan runs down the Guest of Honour’s top authors and publishers


WITH E L James dominating the top of New Zealand’s bestseller lists, it is no surprise that Random House has been the main player in Nielsen BookScan’s chart of NZ publishers, with a 15.6% market share. As we have seen on the Kiwi top 20 charts on page six, the three Fifty Shades books hold positions one to three in the overall chart (and the box set number 18). James has shifted almost $3.3m


thus far in 2012, out of New Zealand’s $147.7m market. Tus, out of every $1 spent in NZ bookshops, customers spent two cents on Fifty Shades books—and she earned almost a quarter (23.5%) of RH’s BookScan revenue. Te public also shelled out for Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy—helped by the film which was released at the beginning of 2012. Collins had a stonking year with $2.1m sold through BookScan NZ and is responsible for a stunning 53.8% of Scholastic’s BookScan sales. Children’s has been very strong

Patterson, at number nine, also benefits from the weight of backlist. Meanwhile, 52% of Lee Child’s NZ revenue comes from his 17th Jack Reacher novel, A Wanted Man. Te 10th bestselling “author”,


Geronimo Stilton, may perhaps be unknown to some. Stilton is actually a Scholastic character—a mouse who is a journalist for the New Mouse City Rodent’s Gazette—originally created by Italian children’s author Elisabetta Dami for Milan’s Edizioni Piemme.
