snow: ski school

Myth #1 Lessons Are Just for Kids While a lesson might be a great way to entertain Jr. for a few hours (wink, wink, see Lessons for Kids), it can also be the perfect way to start your vacation. You get out on the mountain and under the dreamy gaze of your instructor, you ease back into the sport, this time concentrating on form and technique. It’s both a warm-up and a way for you to establish a baseline for improving your abilities on the snow.

Myth #2 I Am Invincible No you are not. You are from out of town, at altitude and, seriously, did you gain weight? Unlike us lucky locals, you get maybe eight days a year on the snow. Taking the Snowbird Tram to the top and dropping into the Gad Valley on your fi rst run will cause you some pain, possibly cause you embarrassment and set you up for a season-ending injury. Remember the part where you’re not a kid? (See Myth #1)

Myth #3 I Have to Take Lessons in a Group Hey. This is America. You don’t have to do anything but object to paying taxes and die. Each of Utah’s resorts offers a vast menu of classes ranging from private lessons to group lessons. Group lessons come with an added bonus—new friends.

Myth #4 Lessons are Expensive For those who believe Myth #2, they are expensive. While private lessons may cost more, resorts have affordable options, many complete with a lift-ticket and equipment rental.

Myth #5 Your Friend or Spouse Can Teach You Yes, I know they have been skiing their entire lives and have mastered every trick in the book, but no, they cannot teach you. Trust us, you will have more fun showing off the skills you learned in a lesson than listening to their frustration escalate as they order commands. Not to mention, the results of your special someone showing you the ropes are often more expensive than the actual lesson itself (refer to Myth 4).
